Re: Turbo Timer? Manditory? (Beaker)

I'm sure you know a turbo timer let's the car idle without you in it for a period of time to let the turbo cool down. This prevents heat soak of the turbo which could cause bearing damage and or the oil to solidify in the turbo in an extreme case. Your turbo is watercooled thereby drastically reducing the posibility of heat soak. It is always a good idea to let it idle for 30-60 seconds before shutdown. All said, I do not think it is really necessary, but it would be one more cool device on your car if you have money to burn......................

Not necessary, but not bad either. I just open the door and idle until the chime stops (1 minute). Another vortexer came up with this...don't remember who, but props to him/her.

a timer is more critical when you're chipped or have upgraded the turbo. in stock form, the k03 probably doesn't need much attention. but it's been a while since i've been stock

think of it this way, if you're running an AWD or AWW @ twice the boost, you already know how much hotter the engine bay is versus stock.
yes, your turbo is watercooled, but the coolant stops circulating once the engine is off. i don't think stagnant coolant is gonna do you much good.
good rule of thumb is to idle down after long trips or "sprited" driving. in most cases, you probably can get by just by taking it easy for the last few miles before your destination.

You guys may know this already, but the NBs come with a coolant circulating pump for the turbo that runs for about 10 minutes after engine shut down. Seems like it would be pretty easy to install this pump and relay in Golf/Jetta/Passat. I much prefer it to a timer that idles the motor after leave the car.

Yeah, that's like an always on timer
