Saw a new Jetta Wagon today and noticed that its rear turn signals were red and not amber like the rest of the VW line. Anyone noticed this? Or did this person doa wrong connection.

Yes, noticed this on a new Jetta wagon by turning on the hazard lights after noticing that there wasn't a yellow portion in the taillights.
A rather unfortunate safety downgrade that Audis sold in the United States also share.
Are taillights with yellow turn signals easily installed on Jetta wagons?

Re: turn signals on Jetta wagon (tjl)

I agree with tjl that it is a safety DOWNGRADE. I can say from living in Europe and from living here that cars with the OLD US style red turn signal are harder to see/notice when they are turning. We did some studies at GM Europe and also found that seperating the taillight from the brake light (as on my Golf) also helped in reaction time from a driver behind (similar, but not as good, as a center brake light).
IMHO, I would change them if an alternative came out, maybe a euro Golf Wagon as they are probably the same.

Re: turn signals on Jetta wagon (bryanY)

Thanks guys for the clarification. I thought I was seeing things. I agreee that amber signals are better than red. I had a friend with an Audi with red signals, she was rear ended even though she had her signal to turn. Person said that he did not know until late that she was turning and thought she was pumping the brakes. Wonder why VW put all red. Hope it is not a running change for 2003 models! I get my Passat wagon with the amber lights thank you.

I see yet one more reason for Hella to make clear tails for the Jetta. I have a feeling that since its on the wagon, the limousince may not be far behind before it gets the all red tails. http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif

Re: turn signals on Jetta wagon (SSheikh)

Yes it's true, and my fix is in the mail!!
My friend in Germany is shipping the OEM Euro Bora Variant turn signals to me and turbowagen. I want my car as close to Euro-spec as possible, plus I do agree that amber turn signals are safer. It's a direct replacement though there is some very minor rewiring necessary to reroute the turn sigs from the Euro fog light location to the correct place. I'll have pics posted as soon as I receive them, which will likely be in about 3-4 weeks.
