The Multipla is a case of form following function. Its shape allows for good headroom and ample room for three across seating. Additionally, there's a low windowline that gives exceptional visibility.
The Aztek's shape, by comparison, sacrificies practicality for looks. Here, there's a high window line and a slant-back that limits cargo capacity.

The Multipla has one advantage over other cars in its class and that´s the CNG setup in the Bipower trim level. It has a full size regular gas tank plus three CNG pressure bottles under the car. All other factory-outffitted CNG cars have either the gas bottle in the trunk limiting the trunk capacity or only an emergency gas tank.
And the CNG isn´t much more expensive then the Diesel. You can save quite some money by using CNG here, because it´s much cheaper than gas or diesel.
That still doesn´t change the hideous styling, but it´s still a pretty clever design.
P.S.: I don´t think the Smart is ugly.

I spent some time with a yellow '02 Aztek like the one pictured this weekend. In person, it's not as bad as the previous ones (the extra color helps, as do the 17" 5 spoke wheels), and actually looks kind of cool in a sci-fi movie sort of way. But once the doors are opened, the Aztek works hard to win you over. The quality is very good. The seating and ingress/egress is excellent. Visibility is good, and it feels "fun" inside (amazing how different it, the Rendezvous, and the Montana minivan can be from each other). A lot of the added touches exclusive to it are pretty neat. In fact, as a do-it-all kind of vehicle It doesn't feel too bad. I'd almost want to get one, and get a licence plate that says "SO WHAT"
Scary, though, that I even looked at it...

The Aztek is uglier because we have to deal with seeing it on the road around here. Who cares if something is ugly if you never have to look at it?

I looked at the new 7 series this weekend, too. I think it's uglier than the Aztek because the Aztek is supposed to be funky and offbeat. The 7 series is supposed to be classy. Both will be bought by those who truly believe that appearance is not everything. Moreso for the Aztec, because they can't be accused of buying for the name...

Yes, the 7 series is god awful. BUT, I think that the 2 ugliest cars now on the road are the Cadillac CTS & the AVALANCHE. Hideous beasts at best.

Exactly, I don't think the Smart falls in with that group. It's styling may be different for us, but I wouldn't consider it ugly.

I think it was agreed upon a while ago that the asstek was the ugliest vehicle in production, and perhaps ever made.

Ever? I highly doubt it. Most of you don't even know all the cars ever made, much less the more oddball small production number units from around the world. The Aztek is fairly mainstream in comparison.
Besides ugly is in the eye of the beholder. I'm warming to the Aztek after spending time with one, but I've never warmed to this:

The Multipla. The Aztek is bad, but they cleaned it up somewhat with the 2002 model.
Plus I've gotten used to seeing it in person.
