As an alternative to forced induction etc. Im looking into a serious transmission setup for my GTI Vr6.
Quaife 6 speed gearset.
4.24 Final Drive
Quaiffe/Peloquin Diff.
doin a bit of research...i found that the 6speed gearset with 4.24 would cruise at 75mph at around 3500 rpm.
My stock Gti tranny will cruise at 77 mph around 3000 rpm.
How about some opinions on this setup. Would you stay with the original 3.389 or go with the 4.24?
Any comments/ observations are appreciated.

Re: Ultimate Transmission??? (oneflygti)

For FI the perfect tranny is a stock 02A with a 3.67 final. The 3.94 is for NA, its too mad
for FI, youll have wheelspin in the fist three gears
. The 3.67 its perfect for a 250-350hp VR6...more than that and u should stick with the 3.389 to avoid massive wheelspin and to load up the turbine well
and make FAST milage in each gear with all the torque.
In any case the Quaife is a must and if you r close to 300hp or above u really need to use drag radials full time to put that power down even with a quaife.

The Quaife 6 speed and 4.24 final drive sound fine for racing, but for a daily driver I for one would prefer a taller top gear. To each his own.
Needless to say, the LSD is a good idea no matter what else you're planning to do to your car. The car should have come that way.

That's the Quaifed tranny I have my EIP SLC. I may prefer the 3.389,
but have to see what's that like in another car first.

Re: Ultimate Transmission??? (oneflygti)

I have the Quaife 6 speed w/ the ATB diff. The 6th gear is a .795. The OEM 5th is a .80. I understand that Quaife may have changed the final drive to the .80 in the new kits, but I haven't heard for sure. So, if you put in the 4.24 final drive, you will be turning the around the same RPM with the 5 or 6 speed in the final gear with either gear set. This being the case, I don't recommend the 4.24 final drive at all unless you plan on running your VR at the track only, and it better be a short track, like the Streets of Willow. If have no intention of going w/ forced induction, I say used the 3.64 or if you really want neck snapping acceleration, the 3.94. If you are going to go with forced induction in the future, use the OEM final drive, you will be glad you did, especially if you drag or road race your VR. The first gear in the Quaife will get you right around 50 mph @ 7000 RPM. From there, the drop between shifts is around 1500 to 1400 RPMs. For people with centrifugal chargers this means that boost doesn't drop off much at all. I will tell you that driving the Quaife 6 speed from a stop with the OEM final drive makes for lack luster throttle tip in response. I feels like you're down a couple cylinders, but once your over 2000 rpm, it's all good. It's kinda cool to launch @ 5000 rpm with a clutch drop and getting controllable wheel spin. I found that I was able to modulate the throttle much better with the taller first gear to minimize wheel spin and get good launches consistently. Also, on the OEM tranny, when you are going into a tight reducing radius corner that is a bit too tall for 2nd and a bit too short for 1st, the Quaife tranny's 1st gear actually becomes the perfect middle ground. I drop it into 1st and still have 2000 rpms to play with. I recommend driving a VR with a Quaife tranny installed to see if it's to your liking. One of my long time customers just picked up one from me after driving mine, and he swears that it is actually easier to shift than the OEM set-up. I can't tell the difference in my tranny.
Hope this helps
