I was accelerating hard from a light turning left and then going up a slight incline (hill). Okay, I'm coming to high revs in 2nd I get a little wheel spin, jump to 3rd and still pulling hard and at about 100-120 km/h... thats exactly when the hand brake light -> (!) <- on the instument cluster starts flashing and beeping. It was as if the E-brake was engaged but of course I don't accelerate while yanking up the hand brake!
I've never read of this happening to anyone else the year I've been here. HAS ANYONE EXPERIENCED IT OR HAVE AN EXPLANATION TO WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED?
Thanks,
Sean Fournier
P.S. I'm going out right now to check for DTC's.

Re: Ultra wierd thing happened with my car today... (seanfournier)

people have had some weird lights go on during hard accelration. i think JOLF saw some pretty creepy lights go on as well.
i got ALL the dash lights to light up once in a hard 4th gear run.
only thing i can think of is excess current

Okay, I got some DTC's. If they are related to that thing that happened today or not I don't know but I got 10 of em'. All of them had to do with a short to ground... injectors, pumps, lots... would anyone like me to post them?

I'm pretty sure the brake light starts to flash if the abs is freakin out or if the brake pads indicator is telling you that your pads are dead. I'm not sure though...I should RTFM and verify this

Re: Ultra wierd thing happened with my car today... (seanfournier)

i have a 2002 GTI, but i'm guessing the dash would pretty much be the same except for the cruise light i have.
the " (!) " light is the ASR light, if i remember correctly. The hand brake light is just a red word saying "BRAKE." i remember this cause soemtimes i'm so stupid to forget to pull my handbrakes while i take off. then this beep comes on warning me. i'll then feel like an idiot along with some guiltyness.
but if i'm right, u're losing traction, thus causing the ASR light to come on. it'll be funny if I'm right, cause u've been doing all these fault code tests and trying so hard to find the problem. well.. i could be wrong, cos my memory is faulty.

I had a problem with the E-brake light last year.A small wire had come lose under the hand bake it was the switch that told the ECU what position your hand brake was in.Even though the hand brake was not on i got the light and a very loud beeping.Check that out.

Two thinks to look at.
One the brake light coming on should indicate to check the ABS control module, were there codes there? My guess is that you are low on break fluid and being on a hill and accelerating made it look like there was no fluid. There may or may not be a code so just check your fluid level.
Secondly , those 10 codes usually tend to be somethign related to the fuel pump relay or related wire to the fuel pump. So look into that.

I checked the ABS module, no codes... I'm going to check for:
(1) Loose wire.
(2) Brake Fluid.
(3) Fuel Pump Wire/Relay
Do our cars with factory brakes, have an indicator that will warn us when they are getting thin by putting a warning on the dash?
Thanks again.

I checked the brake fluid and the fluid is resting at the bottom of the low mark. So I'm going to top it up tomorrow.
I don't think its a loose wire to the E-brake.
Its probably the fluid or a loose wire to the pump or relay because that would cause the DTC's I had. Seems logical to me.
