Updating MIB firmware

It seems the options are either take it to the dealer or do it yourself with an SD card and a downloaded firmware update. Has anyone had any experience with either? Have there been any significant upgrades, bug fixes, performance improvements?

I'm mainly interested in the 2018-19 Mk7.5 units with 8" touchscreen, but if you have a 2017 your experience would be helpful for others.

Looks like there is a site offering the files for $90....wow. Volkswagen Infotainment Update (vagupdate.com)

My 2018 Alltrack SE has part number 3Q0035844B, hardware 721, software 0842, media codec 1.2.0.
I wouldn't mind checking out if there's an update for mine, but that website doesn't tell you what firmware you're updating to or what changes come with it :(

My 2019 Alltrack SE comes with an MIB2 Composition Media unit made by Delphi with firmware MST2_US_VW_P0890D release 0890.

I did recently figure out how to root it, I'm gonna try to enable navigation using MIB FEC/SWaP Code Generator after my move to Texas (in case I brick it lol): MIB2 Composition Media Hacking (shameless plug)

Some more information:

MIB Solution :: Login (no firmware available there for my unit :( )

2017 Alltrack S user experience here; as requested:

KISS: no VW nav nor do I want it.
Not sure the SD card even works...cd player? (I guess I shud RTFM?)

Apple maps thru carplay are superior to wayyy out of date VW nav since day1,
and as for Teh Goolag, well...dont be evil bro.

TLDR: imho Only useful nav feature is compass, and since I Dont Care About
1. playing video on MIB or even
2. artist album covers playing music...
3. MIB works just fine as is...pity the poor 2018 Golf R with new kewl touch only screen thats balky as heck...derp!

Call me old school I prefer keep eyes on road driving...spin volume as need by feel.

Stupid CarNet spyware disenabled by cancelling that free subscription, day 1.
So...
ManSplain me: Why update? Except to opt out of chip "phoning home?"
So, What am I missing? Bueller?

Haha, I agree, no desire to have VW nav. Mine is working fine, just thought at some point they may have improved speed or fixed some bugs (not that I can recall encountering any). I am just one of those people who always wants the latest firmware on all my devices. If the latest improves responsiveness or decreases time to start Android Auto by even half a second when I plug my phone in, I want it!

I guess we'll have to do some more digging to find what the latest firmware ("software") versions are for these units.

I just did the same to my 2017 GSW today and it seems to have updated without issue. I don't have OBDeleven or VCDS so I cannot clear the fault code associated with the software update check, but this is completely unnoticed otherwise.

I'll have to monitor to see whether this update addresses a random issue I've been having where CarPlay volume is muted and I can only unmute if I engage the radio then switch back to CarPlay.

Here's where to get free firmware files:

MIB Solution :: Login Use user/password: guest/guest to access the website. Navigate to MQB_Solution directory and select your type of unit.

I'm seeing this as the highest numbered US firmware: MST2_US_VW_P0870D_MU0870

My car currently has MST2_US_VW_P9120D for software train version, 0842 for software version. I'm not sure why mine has a 9 after the P instead of a 0, but 870 is higher than 842 so I'm assuming this is a newer version. A little nervous to try it out, though.

I found another post that mentions your software version that provides the update history of the 08xx versions. (Source)
Update history of the 08xx versions
In the 800 series, the firmware updates have not always been released logically or continuously. The 891 is not the latest firmware, but the 879!

P9122D (MU0842) âž” P0867D (MU0867) âž” P0890D (MU0890) âž” P0891D (MU0891) âž” P0876D (MU0876) * âž” P0879D (MU0879) *

* = untouched they do not have an activated Telnet connection!

More info from this thread, just putting it here for reference:

VW TSB 91-19-03 (dated 10/23/2019) states that 0876 can be used with vehicles that currently have 0842, 0867, 0870, and 0890.
"0876 is a only a security patch."

"0890 is a very stable version.
0891 is the Europe counterpart and I leave all units at that level of software.
Funny enough the 0879 and 0876 are newer and I never flash them."

After reading the TSB again, it looks like my car should be included in the warranty coverage (although for some reason they list 2018-19 Golf, GTI, R, and Sportwagen but not Alltrack). My car does indeed have PR code IQF (which just means the Gen2 radio, I assume this means the MIB2 Standard version) and software version 842 so it meets the TSB criteria there. I may try going to the dealer at some point to see if they can upgrade me for free. Although to be honest, the hassle of going to the dealer and spending a couple of hours of my time dealing with it (between driving there and back and waiting and explaining etc.) is probably more costly to me than paying $90 through that site. Time is money.

Can anyone help me? Navi doesn't work after firmware update.

I updated my MST2 VW PQ unit from 0245T to 0253T. The process was pretty smooth and It seems radio, phone etc work fine. However the navi system cannot recognize the map.
I used a 32G SD card for the update. It contained both 0253 firmware and V11 map. After the update, it failed to read the map. I removed the card from slot 1 and inserted original SD card with V1 map into slot 2. But it is also not recognized. On-screen message: insert navigation sd card with valid data...

Mine is the same version but part number is 1K8035150L, The only one anything like it on MIB Solutions is "MEN2_WW_VWPQm_P6430L" but that obviously isn't it (I did try it but got Variant error). I've searched and searched but to no avail. My phone option is not available on my unit and was looking for a fix, which brought me here. Somebody somewhere must know something! I just want to connect my phone!:sneaky:

Update: had to get some service at the dealer, so I had them update the MIB2 firmware under warranty. There is a TSB related to the radio volume freezing at times. Here's what my invoice says:

Verified customer concern and found the radio at a low software level of 0842, checked and found related TSB -- Transaction No. 2056716/2. Vehicle requires an update via SD card KN installed a battery maintainer and scanned via ODIS, updated via action code P18T and followed test plan, installed the KN SD card and updated the software to the highest current level of 0879, cleared all faults and sent the final log online, verified increase in level and verified operation of the radio.

I just picked up a Golf R 2019 with a MST2 Delphi unit running the original firmware (MST2_US_VW_P0890_MU0890). Thanks to the previous posters' info, I was successfully able to upgrade it to the latest version (MST2_US_VW_P0883D_MU0883). Here's the steps I used and a brief experience after the upgrade:

  1. Get current firmware version
    1. Hold Menu button
    2. Take a picture of the "Installed Software Train Version" and "Software Version"
  2. Download latest version from mibsolution.one
    1. Select "MQB_Solution" on the left hand side
    2. Select search button and input firmware truncated filename
    3. e.g. MST2_US_VW_P08 in place of MST2_US_VW_P0890_MU0890
    4. Download the firmware that has the latest modified date
    5. Note the 8XXX firmware versions are not in sequential order
  3. Copy update files
    1. Use an 8-16GB SD or USB drive if possible (otherwise google "partition large usb drive")
    2. Format the disk as FAT32 with default allocation size
    3. Unzip the update package and choose MIB type (STD or PLUS, as shown in the "Software Version"
    4. Copy all the files and folders within the STD or PLUS folder to the root of the disk (not within any other folders)
  4. Upgrade you unit
    1. Start your car with the engine running
    2. Let the unit fully boot then insert the USB or SD card
    3. Hold the menu button then select "Update" button
    4. Select the source as USB or SD
    5. The upgrade process takes about 15-20 mins
    6. Do not interrupt the upgrade otherwise you may brick your unit!
Observed Changes Post Upgrade:
  1. Reduced input lag when navigating menus. Wasn't terrible pre-upgrade, but is much more responsive on MU0883
  2. Android Auto no longer stutters switching between apps and nearly instantaneously launches when phone is connected
  3. New boot splash screen added a blue line and Golf R symbol
  4. New flipping animations when switching menus
The 5 year+ of improvements made to the firmware made a huge difference in usability and enjoyment of the infotainment system. I'd highly recommend upgrading to P0883D (as of this writing) if you have a MST2 Delphi unit running the P08XXX software train.

Thank you. While a bit off-topic, I just followed your instructions and updated a 2019 Atlas to P0883. Worked great. Thank you

Just had mine updated. Faster load times to be sure.

1 question.

Before the update, when I pit the car reverse I would automatically have the overhead overlay that showed my car and the proximity sensors with the distance lines.

Now after the update when I put it reverse I have to hit a button labeled menu to make this same overhead overlay show up on the rear view screen.

Anyone know what setting this is in VAG COM or odbeleven? I would like to make it the way it was.

I successfully updated my software on my 2017 Jetta, but there appears to be an unresponsive spot on the screen that confirms all installs went ok. I can scroll the list and click into specific installs, but the back arrow does not work. If I reboot the console, it just returns to this screen. Is there a way to exit this confirmation screen without using the touch screen?

Thank you for this. I was having some trouble with the file transfers and needed to see a little more broken down info. I just got a 2017 Alltrack and updated my MIB2 like 6 versions newer, it works so much better it’s awesome
