UPsoluters - To socket or not to socket?

Like it says. Upsoluting this week. Anyone got any advice (Advice I mean aside from the great chip debate.)? Should I socket or no?

i am undecided on this because upsolute guys are soooo col about reflashing back to stock for free for any major dealer work. socket in case of disaster would void warranty.
Re: UPsoluters - To socket or not to socket? (Blender)

From what I've heard, it's better to not socket the chip....less chance of the connection coming loose.
It also looks like stock, so if the ECU gets opened up for any reason, they won't be able to tell right off the bat (not that the dealer can open up the ECU themselves....).

Don't socket unless you plan to go with a K04 or if you want to constantly test different chips.
I had a problem with my socket and it's not fun. If you're going to get a socketed chip, get yourself used on opening/closing the ECU. Socketed chips might disconect from the socket and you will have to open your ECU to fix that. It might happen ... I didn't say IT WILL, but be READY.

UPsolute doesn't recommend socketing. The UP chip is undetectable and can't be flashed. No reason to get a socket IMO.

If you're getting an UP chip, don't socket. There's no point, it's just creating a weak point in your electrical system. I have a socket and I cringe every time I change chips, praying that I don't break a pin.

so when they see that the requested boost is at 2.0 mbar, they won't get suspicious? there is no such thing as an undetectable chip.

OK. Since some people want to nit-pick, here's the skinny: The UP chip is UNDETECTABLE by VAG-COM and CAN NOT BE FLASHED. That's what I meant. Any 5 year old can detect a chipped 1.8T with a butt dyno.

I went socket so I can change between GIAC and UP chips. But if you ask and pay for, you can get your chips on different daughter boards. Its so easy then

I would much rather take my car in with a stock chip if my tranny or engine was broke.

Hey andy, can you guys "flash" the upped chip in the case we need to go in for a major problem? (as mentioned in above post)

Anyone can really flash those Tsop packages with a small (similar to jtag) device hooked into your printer port. Been doing this on my dish network box (hehe) for a long time, didn't realize until recently the tsop package was the same chip.

First let me say I'm no electronics expert. But, according to UPsolute, their chips can't be flashed because their software has a password that locks out the wrong people. AKA FLASHERS!
UPsolute simply flashes your chip with their software which has a password that only an UPsolute rep has to be able to get into if you want your chip back to stock specs.

I went with the Upsolute socket and had a little trouble -- the car and ECU got in several no speaking matches. The end game was to pull the socket and solder the chip to the board. Save yourself the experience of sheepishly looking at your girlfriend when your car won't turn over, and skip the socket. (BTW, Upsolute service in each instance was excellent)
See, Senna 1.8T, if I had only listened to you originally...

hmm we can dish program as well huh? I've got a Card programmer, but didn't know about sat's is this Dss or standard sats?
Re: UPsoluters - To socket or not to socket? (Bug_Power)

A chip is a chip is a chip. How you program it, read, write etc, is really the design of the manufacture of the chip..
I've got a mikobu loader, dual iso, and jtag-lpt (home grown) for various operations. Of course i only "test" dish
for educational purposes only. Fun stuff. Anyways.
I commend you upsoluters for choosing this method over replacing the eprom like giac. It takes a little more know-how to inline flash the code than to brute force rip a chip off the board...

Re: UPsoluters - To socket or not to socket? (BrandonC)

I noticed that your have your Up chiped dynoed at 174hp and 207lb-ft at the wheels, isnt that kind low? I thought that the chip gives you 202hp and 240Torque like the GIAC and APR chips do? How much power do the other chips produce at the wheels. Also Is this just based on only the chip without mods?? Please let me know cuz I am deciding on which chip to get.
Re: UPsoluters - To socket or not to socket? (mrkrad)

just to clear a few things. We pull the chip off the board and reprogram it. We have the ability to protect chips from flashing through the obd port, but because this is not done and would make it obvious that the car is chipped, we do not do this.

174whp is at least 202hp, same with the torque, you are comparing wheel #s to crank #s. I dynoed 182hp 220ft/lb with just a chip.
