Hello:
I am thinking about buying a used Golf. 4 Dr. AT. basic model. Friend of mine warns me about the maintainence cost. He said the parts are very expensive and the labour cost for repair is high.
Any comment or experience?

Re: Used Gold, maintainence and repair cost (sdfung)

parts are more than some cars i guess.. many parts are available through dealers only so that sucks.. But labor is labor. You have to understand that when buying a car that is 10 or so years old and has 100-150,000miles on it that you are ganna have to do some maintenance (depending on the previous owners.) Be picky and dont settle

The 2.0 motor runs forever, but be very wary of VW auto transmissions, even the new tiptronic models are riddled with problems. I would say find a stick shift 2.0 and all you'll need to worry about is checking the oil and adding fuel.
I have a 91 Jetta with a 1.8L motor that has 247,000+ miles on it and the headgasket is still the original. They run forever if you take of them. It's only had the clutch replaced, and that was the biggest repair done to the car.
