Vag result

I am having idling problems with my jetta. I hookede up the vag-com to the control mod and come up with 2 codes
Throttle Acutator Malfunction 17988
and
MAF sensor signal too high 16487
what do they mean, is my throttle body defective, do i need a new one? and is the MAF sensor reading too high because of the throttle body?
any help is greatly appriciated

Re: Vag result (vtecths)

Clear the codes. Do a throttle body adaptation. See if they come back.
Re: Vag result (JettaRed)

thanks, i'll try that
i got some other info--- i was told that the maf sensor will cause a throttle acutator malfunction
btw MAF Sensor $392 from VW $175 used
Re: Vag result (vtecths)

The search is down, but someone posted a way to clean the MAF as a last resort. Basically, you remove the MAF and put it in a baggie with rubbing alcohol. Shake it gently for a while and remove it. Let it dry completely. reinstall.
I don't know if this will work or not, but if you're going to spend $400, it's worth a try first.
Re: Vag result (JettaRed)

thanks again, i'll try it. What do i have to lose??
Re: Vag result (vtecths)

i also have a code on my car that no one can figure out,
it comes up reading idle reaching limit.
i tried resetting it, but it only returnes
Re: Vag result (breandan)

the way to clean the MAF was posted by spitpilot, and basically consists of spraying brake-cleen, the chlorinated stuff i think, all over the MAF sensor from a distance of about 8-12 inches. Then let it air dry. Do not touch the MAF.
Re: Vag result (breandan)

VW published a Tech Bulletin (which we could read if they had an open tech support site) that addressed cleaning MAF. Spray with "nonresidue electronic cleaner" (trichlorathane). I used Brakecleen by CRC (chlorinated version) which is trichlor. VW warns not to spray too close, use compressed air to dry, or touch MAf with anything since its delicate. After spraying, I installed retrofit kit to prevent oil from coating MAF from the PCV system. Two years later, all is well! http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

I had the same code come up in my car for almost two years. I spent over a grand trying to diagnose and fix it. I replaced the MAf and the after cat O2 sensor with no luck. I had a mechanic i knew at VW take a look at it and he said it needed a new throttle bodie because the TPS or something was malfunctioning. I had it replaced and haven't had a code come up since then.

Re: Vag result (EuroSport98)

If you do the rubbing Alcahol Trick Make sure Its 90% pure not the 60% stuff they sell at the drug store that has more Water and will do more damage than anything
