VCDS or ODB11?

Which is everyone finding easier to use? I want to add the down and up window function to the key fob - maybe change the NAV code to allow while driving so the co pilot can use the touch screen.
Once the warranty is over - maybe screw up the vehicle? 🤪

Both devices/apps will do most everything you might want. The Ross Tech unit is the premium one to have and has unparalleled support. That said, I have an OBDeleven device, (mostly due to the cost), and I have had no issues with it at all. Just keep in mind that most of the support is peer-to-peer.

I chose VCDS several years ago because of RossTech's excellent vendor support as well as the larger number of independent websites and user forums (like VWVortex!) that discuss its usage.

NOTE: While shopping for a used vehicle a few years ago, a quick VCDS scan alerted me to damage that was not disclosed by the (non-VW) dealer nor a Carfax report. The collision repair was well done, and I would have missed it. I have never used OBDeleven, but after a few good experiences with VCDS, I have not yet seen the need to switch.

Easier to use, or more powerful and better support? Vagcom all the way.

In my opinion, OBD11 hides a lot of the actions and raw coding changes. Not saying that's a bad thing, but I personally like to see the coding and adaptations that are being done. I'm a geek and work professionally in the IT world, I like to see what's going on.

But for others, I can see the appeal of one-click actions.

It's VagCom/VCDS for me, and has been for 20 years.

Sorry for the delay I have only just seen this post, OBD11 Only hides the actions if you use one click apps, if you manually code the changes then there is an automatic history function that you can see what you did and when, Plus easy to use Backup facility so you can again easily (even with one click apps) compare before and after and see the changes.

personally i have over 7000 credits and thats because i took the 6 a day and only used them for testing and things like service reset.

i would always go pro as i want to do and see the coding so loss of credits means nothing other than showing poor customer skills, they currently have a sale on so you get pro licence for 2 years for price of 1 year plus 100 credits.

i suspect for most people one years pro will get all the coding done and just buy a few credits when you revert to basic

I looked recently, but forget. The Hex-Net is $300?
Seems like a decent deal considering now I've dropped close to that for 1 year of OBDEleven ownership (well, now 2).
Wondering if the SFD stuff that VCDS doesn't have (currently) will play in the future....

Bob.

just a thought but you will need to confirm my understanding.

firstly you could buy the sale package today
my understanding is you can activate the new 2 year pro licence up to one year after purchase

thus you carry on with your current pro and when it expires you use the new 2 year license.

then sell second dongle or save it in case yours breaks.

but dont take my word if interested contact support first

I am way behind on VCDS Mobile but last i heard it did not support all the features that the cable does but happy to be proved wrong.

I "contacted" OBDEleven and Victorija said:

Hey Bob,

I understand your disappointment, but our marketing department doesn't make pre-announcements about the coming sales.
If you have enabled the notifications from OBDeleven in your phone settings, then you will receive the notifications that the sale has started.
Don't get upset - we will have big sales in the autumn/winter seasons 🙌

No mention of any kind of what you describe.

Pretty sure they are all about making $ at this point.
Loyalty means nothing....

Bob.

Sorry, I should have included my original complaint:

I bought my 1 yr subscription just a few weeks ago. Had I known the sale was coming I would have paid about $40 to get another dongle and TWO years .

#23 ·
To be fair they have always been about making a $ but i suspect they are suffering the cost of building the BMW interface along with SFD which new owners are paying for.

They would not suggest a way round the problem as that cost them money.

but as i say if you are interested ask support

If i buy the two year license now do i have up to a year before i have to enable it and will it still last for 2 years from that date

Ron, I get the making money part, but where is the helping customer part?
Most companies will say buy this and we'll include this, or there are some specials on the horizon.
Like I said previously, I had no clue that when I bought my Pro plan that it was YEARLY.

They need to take a serious look at their marketing strategy.
Yes, they have the SFD thing, but their tactics are all wrong.
If VCSD offered SFD, at this point, it would almost be a no brainer.

I'm sorry, but I'm not very happy paying a YEARLY thing for a few times a year tool.

Bob.

Dont get me wrong i fully agree and VOLTAS will see how many customers they loose over time.

However VW / BMW and many others are going down the path of doing over the air update where you can outright buy or rent software updates (like heated seats / different interior lighting options) and charging a subscription for some features. So there is a question mark over how long people will pay for a seperate tool to make changes anyway

My personal view if i were buying it today would be get all my coding done in year one then buy a small amount of credits for the one click apps i will use thereafter.

#26 ·
I get you, but honestly, I find < 10% of the one click apps evenly remotely useful.
Maybe they are, but they are poorly described, and sometimes don't work for your vehicle? (like the changing to "tubes" in the cluster).
They offer Park Assist stuff when my vehicle doesn't have it. WTF?
Pretty sure they don't have a clue what is offered in NAR vehicles (or barely).

All I got out of my "subscription" so far is EASY ENTRY and JOKER TAILS (and a few others).
Worth my $?

Bob.

100 credits for Sign Recognition that "might" work without errors?

I don't think I'm going to invest in another tool right now.
It seems like most of the stuff you can do with them is GLAM things.
I realize these tools have diagnostic parts to them, but my 1+ yr vehicle doesn't need that (yet).
I don't "beat" my vehicle, quite to the contrary, it gets babied.

I've always loved my cars....

Bob.

Uhh vagcom is a million times more than a glam tool. It's the sophisticated OG tool that can program body modules far more extensively than anything else.

To be fair both tools are more than just simple one trick ponies but in both cases you have to do the research to get the full benefit out of them (Customization, Retrofits and Servicing).

Just to complete the OBD11 Part of this.

Support confirmed my belief

I'm a retired Software Engineer, I know what the tools are capable of (and what damage they can do in the wrong hands).
The normal person, however is only going to use the tool to accomplish small tasks.

Ron, I'm not sure what good that info is to me at this point, I'm certainly not going to drop another $100 after just spending $60 (for only a 1 yr. script).
For what's left of "CANWEEK" it may benefit others though....

I'm just not caring for the way they are doing business.....

Bob.
