Quite a few of these things have been roaming the streets of Denver lately. Ive seen one with a 1.8tnevarlose and one with an Audi V10. Seems like someones crazy drunken idea has actually stuck, and they really aren't that terrible looking if you're into the open car thing. They let you select engine, drivetrain etc. and either build it yourself or have them build it with all the parts you choose. Its surprisingly priced too, rolling chassis starts at $7000. Bonus vintage car in the background content.

I wonder about the actual engineering (chassis/brakes/suspension) since all the weight looks to be in the back.
And why not use all weather seats since open cockpit?
Well, that seems rather flexible.

Where are the triangles? We were promised triangles.

I would wear a full face helmet with this thing.

Not because a rollover, but because it would look cooler than this.

With the open footwell in the above photo, plus the fender-less front tires, this thing has to kick up all sorts of siht into the cockpit.

Criticism aside, it looks like it might be fun, and I bet they sell one of these before Elio delivers their first car.

Yea. No thanks.
It looks terrifying. I'd drive it.

Definitely.

I think I would want a fairing or two to deflect road debris that mcbanagon mentioned, and maybe a little more in the roll-bar dept to make me feel good---but i'd still give it a rip, either way.
I'd probably drive it with a motorcycle helmet, or at least a half helmet.

When little pebbles hit you at 70-80mph it hurts, motorcyclists will know :)
In case of rollover, bend this mousetrap bar over your head
The Atom's standard roll bar is pretty minimalist too:

I would do it Roadkill style.
Strip down a C4 vette and add a cage.

This was a great episode. Gave many, many bad ideas.

There seem to be a lot of options on their ordering page that could remedy some of the issues talked about here. The car in the OP doesn't seem to have any of this, save for the canvas hood.

Floating Front Fenders
Add Front Fenders to my Velocity - $TBA

Canvas Side Covers
Add Side Covers to my Velocity - $389

Canvas Hood
Add Hood to my Velocity - $259

Finished Padded Dash (Black, French Stitched, Leatherette)
Add Dash to my Velocity - $249

T-Top Support Bar Option
Add T-Top support bars to my Velocity - $109

I like the exposed battery behind the passenger seat and the non-use of seatbelts by the fat guy and the slutty looking chick.

  Seriously, this thing does not look particularly well done from the little I have seen of it.

Post pics of your chic.
I've been looking at the options and what can be added or deleted. I am seriously liking this car! I wish more manufacturers would follow suit with this level of customization. I like the two different engine options but it would be interesting to see what other engines people cram into this chassis. I'm already dreaming of options that include everything from Buick V6 turbos to Bolt 4 turbos.

They say a Subaru EJ-style setup is coming soon. Plenty of wrecked Subaru's around these parts. An EJ20 in that car would be fun.

The Atom's standard roll bar is pretty minimalist too:

...but it's not a mousetrap.
The additional bar available for the Atom (standard on the SRA) is braced backwards and over the standard hoop. It's a must-have in my book.
The Atom has had several shortcomings (TMI and the aftermarket have been addressing them well), but it arguably created this exo-car genre. Most of the clones don't have the track data to support if they work well or not. We rely on 'well, that doesn't look safe', or 'why not triangulate here?'

Source: I worked at a US Atom distributor.

A car worth noting in this genre is the Palatov D2. Palatov is (was?) an Atom owner as well. He's got several styles of cars, but the D2 has a CARB-legal LS3 crate motor. There is a Sector111 body derivative called the Drakkan as well.

What happened to the Velocity Exo?

The Velocity Rails company out of Colorado seems to have just disappeared. I'm not sure if the operation stopped business or what but it is like the only foot print left is in the sales of still existing vehicles on the market or in some consumer reviews from local Colorado Journalists.
