Hi, was wondering if anyone knew what this problem would be. I have a 2001 jetta 1.8t wolfsberg that i bought used a couple years ago.

the vents only blow hot air. even with the air conditioner on. The car seems to run fine besides that.

any thoughts, ideas, fixes?

something i need to take to my mechanic?

Could be many things in the A/C system. Bad compressor, fan switch, refrigerant level, etc.

Take it in to a shop.

would this be an A/C problem if hot air is coming from it when everything is off and the setting set to cold?

for example, if i were to have the vents set to blowing cold air, with the a/c off, shouldn't it just blow air from the outside into the car?

Does AC cold air come from the vents when you first start the car from cold before the coolant gets hot? If not, the AC is not working.

it blows cool air until the engine warms up, and the temp goes up.

It will blow ambient temp air if you are driving and have the fans on, and it will blow hot air (the engine is heating it up) if you are idling. Your A/C is broken. Get it fixed if you want cold air.

it sounds like your hot/cold temp selector is broken.

when on vent mode, "blowing cold air until the engine warms up" sounds like the selector is stuck on hot, and the vented air is being routed over the heater core (through which the engine coolant passes).

could be a broken selector cable, but i'm betting it is something related to the selector.

If the "cool air" is below ambient temperature, then the AC is working, but the dash position control is not opening the right duct doors.
