Re: Very rare little turbo hatchback on eBay (cthulu703)

Yes the second stick shifted between final drive ratios. This gave a interesting combination of gear ratios. For whatever reason they chose this technique instead of developing a five speed. The next iteration of the car had a 5 speed. These were fast cars, very light. The next iteration of the car was very nice, it even was reasonably styled and had a nice interior.
Yeah its off topic, but it is a carf from the same period and was faster than rabbits of the time. They didn't stand up to hard use or salt used to clear the roads of New England. The engines lasted @70k miles usually and after that they burned lots of oil and eventually grenaded. Thanks for posting it.

agreed, but talk about a sleeper, just take all the turbo logos off, man the 80's was a dark era of the automobile on styling, (except for european cars of course!)

Re: Very rare little turbo hatchback on eBay (A1speedracer)

At stock boost (8.7psi), the car puts out 102hp and 122ft-lb. Not very impressive, but you have to consider that the car weighs about 2000lbs, is non-intercooled, and has an exhaust diameter the size of a dime (literally). With an intercooler, a larger exhaust, and raised boost they can make significantly more.
I totally disagree with the 70k miles on the engine statement though. These cars are not made by Dodge, they are made by Mitsubishi. On the Yahoo board dedicated to these cars, some of the members are past 200k.

I don't know, but they are heavy as hell. If someone could make a substitute bumper (maybe out of a Rabbit Eurobumper--anyone have measurements?), you could probably knock 100lbs off the car.

I remember a person down the street had one when new. They also seemed to be flying down the street. After breaking the colt they had GLHS both the charger and omni versions. At the time I was about 9 y.o.
Cool car.

Re: Very rare little turbo hatchback on eBay (AshlandSi)

My first car was an '80 Colt RS hatchback that was same body style as the car mentioned but was without the turbo. At the time, my best friend had a '77 Rabbit that was a lot quicker but my Colt w/ swaybars could easily out handle the Rabbit.
The Colt RS was a lot more "plush" inside than the Rabbit and had pwr mirrors, four speaker stereo and sunroof standard. The twin-stick was really more of a gimmick than anything and provided very little in improved fuel economy. The difference was in the spacing of the gears in the two ranges. I spent most of the time driving in the economy mode and then when I felt like having some fun put it in power which had closer spaced gears.
It is true that these engines would begin burning oil around the 80k mark and would belch a lot of blue smoke. I had one, my mom had one and my girlfriend had one and each car began smoking at the same point.
My dream at the time was to own an '84 Turbo. The car magazines at that time all raved about the these little machines. They weren't bad looking either except for the tacky "turbo" emblem on the rear. They came in either white, black, gray or red like the GTI.
