VF stage 1 MK3 Bosch F6DTC plugs are causing knocking???

668 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  pal
I know it's not the plugs that are causing the knocking..
Maybe a plug is loose somewhere. I checked all the wires but all I get is loud knocking (I'm not driving the car, I turn it right off).
What could cause this?
I removed each plug and reinstalled (so no crossed wires).
I heard these plugs don't really need to be gapped (I didn't gap them-3prong).
Am I missing something here? I've changed my plugs a number of times but this is the first time since my s/c.
I've never had this problem before...
help.

knocking? from plugs? and your sure its not like more of a arching sound? can you see any signs of arching.

are you using anything on the plugs when you put them back in? all the prongs on the plugs?

well, I uninstalled them and re-installed.
Everything is fine. Car runs fine.
I have no clue what happened. After I rechecked all plug wires it still made the sound.
Then I pulled each plug out and installed again (to correct trq-which I think is 18 ft lbs) and the car ran fine.
Wierd. Maybe I had threaded the plug in sideways???? But I have no clue how I could have done that w/o damaging the threads...plus, well...I just would have known if I did that. I don't know what the hell happened. All I care about is that it runs fine now.
Thanks for the input tho.

nater, try switching back to the stock plugs to confirm the plug
theory.
I switched to the F6DTC's yesterday evening- 3 prong, already gapped
and have driven a few miles (aout 10) since then including a few
pulls to redline and have not heard anything out of the ordinary, YET.

Thanks pal,
I'm not going to worry about switching back. It seems as though I either didn't have a plug wire on tight (even tho I double checked it) or a plug wasn't torqued down to spec (which is more of a possibility b/c I didn't use my trq wrench until the last time I reinstalled them).
I don't know if it's my imagination (could be psychological) but the car feels VERY strong (in this HIGH HEAT and humidity). Much stronger than it felt with the stock plugs.
I've also got a setup like you HAD with the dsr cams so I've been fighting some power loss b/c of it. But unlike you, I've got just a tad bit more juice getting to my motor than you had (damn those mk4 injectors).

Later,

Anytime!
BTW, I feel that these plugs make the car run better for sure ... maybe
a tad stronger too given the heat we are seeing these days.
MK IV's s**k as far as performance ... injectors are smaller, the manny
is plastic
Oh well, at least it runs OK now and can hold its own.
BTW, I still have the DSR cams sitting at home; I think I will put them
back in once I get Stage II and see how that works. I liked those cams
and how well they revved to 7K.
