• Top-class competition in lumberjack sport thrills millions of fans worldwide

Hannover / Waiblingen – Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has become a partner of ANDREAS STIHL AG & Co. KG in top-class lumberjack sport contests, the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS ®  Series, or STS for short. These includes international contests such as the STS Champions Trophy and STS World Championship and all national events, including the Amarok Cup on July 18 in Dinslaken and the German Championship on August 30 in Cologne.

At the next STIHL TIMBERSPORTS ®  World Championships in Poznan, Poland in November, around 7,000 spectators are expected. "We are delighted to have Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles as partner. The two brands go together perfectly and enable us to tell exciting stories on all aspects of the sport and our products," explains Paul F. Sumalowitsch, the man responsible for international sponsorship for the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS ®  Series.
The focus of the PR and marketing collaboration is on professionals in the outdoor sector. Dr. Günther Scherelis, Head of Communications at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, sees great opportunities in the partnership: "We build vehicles such as the Amarok for professionals in the outdoor world, for people who earn their living or spend their free time there. The international STIHL TIMBERSPORTS ®  Series is a good fit with the Amarok: it's all about high performance, precision, know-how and stamina."

In Germany alone the series attracts a total of over 100,000 spectators annually, while for years several million viewers worldwide have been following the international STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® contests on television, on channels including that of TV media partner Eurosport. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has already made its first appearance with the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS ®  Series. That was in mid-May at the Ligna Trade Fair in Hannover, the company's home city. Directly after that Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles then appeared in front of around 2,500 enthusiastic fans at the Champions Trophy in Florence, Italy, where the world's best eight athletes competed against each other.

The Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles brand has responsibility within the Volkswagen Group for the development, production and sales of light commercial vehicles. The range of models encompasses urban delivery vehicles, transporters, MPVs, campervans and pick-up trucks. Around 60 years ago, the foundation stone was laid for the Hannover plant, the main production site of the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles brand. Today, commercial vehicles are produced at the three Group sites in Hannover, Poznań in Poland and Pacheco in Argentina. In 2014, the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles brand supplied over 446,000 vehicles to customers all over the world.

The STIHL TIMBERSPORTS ®  Series has been established since 1985 as an international series of contests in lumberjack sports. It has its roots in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the USA. Since the 19th century, the foresters there traditionally staged local lumberjack competitions to determine the best in their profession. Over the course of time, these evolved into professional events of a high sporting standard. In the contests of the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS ®  Series the athletes compete against each other in six disciplines, three with an axe and three with a saw. The classic axe disciplines are Springboard, Underhand Chop and Standing Block Chop, while in the disciplines Single Buck (hand-held cross-cut saw), Stock Saw (standard chainsaw) and Hot Saw (tuned competition chainsaw) the participants compete to achieve the best time using saws.
