Re: Volkswagen Etiquette (JettuhWolf)

It mostly depends on which VW I'm driving. In my stock Jetta, I feel that other VW drivers don't sense any camraderie, given that there are only a billion of us on the streets, so I generally don't wave. I certainly will return the greetings if I get them, though.
In the NBC, it's a completely different story. If I run into another NBC driver, there is horn-honking, light-flashing, and waving. Hell, we get people in all sorts of cars waving to us -- or even pedestrians.

Re: Volkswagen Etiquette (merlin)

when I first rolled out in my j-wagon, it was pretty big news here cuz there weren't many around. Now that there are 3 more in my little neighbourhood and 2 parked on the street where I work, it's just another car. First time I saw a wagon driver, we rolled down our windows and yakked about our cars...now, the wagons just roll by hey, this is Toronto baby, nobody says hi here!

Re: Volkswagen Etiquette (JettuhWolf)

I traded in my Jeep Wrangler for my GTI. There's been a long standing tradition of "The Jeep Wave" that I always did. I've yet to experience a "VW Wave", but I can start.
BTW: This tradition goes back to post-WWII when GIs who brought back European sportscars would wave to one another as members of an exclusive club. It only seems fitting for VW owners to wave to each other.

Re: Volkswagen Etiquette (JettuhWolf)

i look at the driver first. that's because i totally agree with the other guy who said NY is filled with stock 2.0's that old people drive haha!
only when i look at the driver, and the driver looks back at me, and we know we have that mutual VW-bond will i give him the nod. i saw a black VR6 yesterday on the NY thruway and we both gave eachother the nod which was pretty cool. we stuck together for pretty much the entire drive down the thruway towards NJ and on rte. 17 until he got off at his exit. i also saw melman8r on the NY thruway toll booth(harriman) also. and we both gave eachother the nod as well. so it all really depends on who's driving the VW. if u see the driver, and he/she sees u, u can tell if the person is a "nodder" or not.

Re: Volkswagen Etiquette (GrayRayT)

I haven't got a chance to wave at anyone, but my wife's stock green Jetta get's compliments and the Wagon get's even more and for a 2.0 it's fun to drive.
I am a new VW convert, these arer really great cars!, but then you guys already knew that.

It is pretty odd, this works! It's some sort of mystical bond which is shared by all Volkswagen owners. Perhaps it's some sort of conspiricy driven by a shadow government working within our country, seeking to breed super-drivers using dna from german engineers on our own, weak soccer-mom raised drivers!
Perhaps. Then again, it might just be that we're all nuts

heh. I tried nodding and smiling, and all I get are people either turning away or look at me like I'm a freak. from then on I only nod to modded VWs.
usually it's the drivers who're not in VW that I get the most stares from.

Funny you should mention this. Just picked up my GTI on Tuesday -- today I was driving home and an A4 guy gave me a nod. Pretty good stuff. I just got rid of a del sol and almost no other del sol owners shared in this kind comraderie -- except the modded ones.
