VR6 Cams: How hard to do

1552 Views 19 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  FatSean
Ok I can get a good deal on a set of 268`s. My problem is how hard is the removal of these cams. I am mechanically inclined and have all the tools. Could someone possibly post a how to and a how difficult this would be to do?
Thanks
Kyle

I think VWP had a how to in like spring of 1999, it was on a jetta. Fairly easy to follow and understand.

Hummm does anyone have this issue?
Re: VR6 Cams: How hard to do (BlackieVR6)

You can find a description of installing cams in a Mk IV at
http://www.msu.edu/~tatgeeva/cams.html
and a description of a Mk III cam installation here:

Of course it's also essential to have the Bentley manual.
Re: VR6 Cams: How hard to do (rew2)

One last thing -- I believe the 268 cams will necessitate a change in valve springs as well, an extra level of complication that isn't described in the two sites I gave in my previous post. (They are for 256 cams, which work with stock springs.)
Re: VR6 Cams: How hard to do (rew2)

Well here is the deal... I need to get my stock springs and cams out of my corrado for a mk3 VR6. So I need to know how to do the swap. Im not worried about my car as of yet due to the fact that my car isnt in the road yet. Im swapping my stuff for his.

How exactly do I go about replacing the springs. No one seems to talk about that at all. Does anyone have an idea?
Re: VR6 Cams: How hard to do (BlackieVR6)

Your talking about Valve springs? COmpressed Air my friend
Re: VR6 Cams: How hard to do (rew2)

Valve springs are a must have with 268s – you’ll experience binding with the stock springs when you rev over 7000 RPM.

Hey i have a Chevette its an 82' poop brown color and it was my first car it now sits in my yard next to the 1955 1st series bowtie Napco truck i am rebuilding with my dad. The Chevette reminds me of my Corrado NOT!!!

P.S. i was told by the dealer that the Chevette is now worth a woping $100

Re: VR6 Cams: How hard to do (BlackieVR6)

You'll need a shop vise and a 2 or 3 foot helper bard to crack the sprocket bolt off of the larger cam. Other than that, not a big deal.
Re: VR6 Cams: How hard to do (FatSean)

uhmmm bro...doesnt look like you are getting much help on this...i think this job is best put up to a pro....Its a great feeling to accomplish something like this...but its a terrible terrible feeling to break poop on a VR6.... and your wallet will bite you in the ass because you took its green away...Maybe there is a mechanic that will allow you to watch the whole process that way next time you can do it by yourself ... Just a thought.....

The shop manual details everything you need to know. It's like 60-70 bucks. I figured you already had the book and just wanted some tips.
