VR6 over heating ...... I think maybe my electric fan is not working?

Driving home last friday night the high temp light came on, I checked the oil temp it was rising too. Kept driving home about 2 more miles. When I parked the car blew water out of the top of the water tank. I checked for water in the oil none. Added water to the tank cranked the car and let it run everything seem fine? I have not driven the car untill I have more time to check it out. Bought the car used 5 months ago. It has 102000 miles new plugs and wires and runs great! What do I need to check? where isthe electric water pump , will they stop and start? What will happen it it does?

Re: VR6 over heating (Russ)

your cap to the expansion tank might be bad, letting it shoot out. Or you have air in your system.. my guesses anyway
Re: VR6 over heating (jininkan)

My car did the same thing to me when my expansion tank cap wasnt sealing right...it would cause the system to overflo out the tank all over the motor/ground...check that first...easy fix

This the Blinking red coolant light come on? i think that light means low coolant in the resivoir, or does it mean high temps? is there a light for high water temps?

It is the same light!

I dont think so, i dont think it means high temps, ill start my car in the mornin, and it will be low...and it will blink when my water is like 40º
Re: VR6 over heating (DubbinVr6)

My thermostat went bad on my vr6 about a year ago and the oil and water temp went fairly high. I changed it out myself and it was not the most straight forward job. The bentley manual does not cover it in detail and there is not alot of room to work. That is one thought, it could be the thermostat.

Mine did same thing... I changed thermostat and fan switch at the same time and the problem went away..... Its not that hard of a job(DIY) and parts are like $40total.
Re: VR6 over heating ...... I think maybe my electric fan is not working? (Russ)

I checked the car this morning and noticed the cooling fan never came on even with the ac switched on! So now I need to find the cause of this.

....fan switch...

check both sides of the radiator. if the tubes are hot on one side only, your thermostat is probably bad. my oil temp was running hot, 250's in the winter and the water temp was fine, dead center. then all of a sudden both got hotter. my thermostat was bad. changed it and all was better. oil went back down to the 215's again

Where is the fan switch? On the old vws I had it screwed into the side of the radiator? If so can you tell my where to find it, thanks for all the info.

Check under the battery on the radiator. Try putting 12V onto the output wires and see if the fans work. I think the fan should still work when the AC is on even if the switch is shot. You may have a bigger problem(fan itself, control module ?).
