my brother told me that they stopped calling the vr6 the vr6 and now just refer to it as a v6... any truth to this?

V6=2 cylinder heads....... VR6=1 very complicated head!

im pretty sure they badged b5 passats as v6 whent hey had the traditional vr6 engine under the hood. i could be wrong but thats what i thought.

the logic behind this...but amo not sure of what the new DOHC vr6 setup is but...being a DOHC, VW might haveta split the head for 4 camshaft (2 cam for each head)...before it was an SOHC vr6, so only 2 cams are needed so it will fit over one head...just a guess base on what i've heard
o by the way..thats because vr6 means narrow angel v6 in german i think...but since you must split the head to make it DOHC, its not long narrow angle..thus now a v6

VR6 is 15 degree V engine with one head. That makes it actually more or an inline 6 then V6

It is true. Since the introduction of the 4th generation Golf/Jetta, the R has dissapeared, they are only badged as Golf V6 or Bora V6

thanks thats what i wanted to hear...
for all the people that gave me a lesson on the setup of a vr6 vs a v6 i already knew that stuff i just wanted to know if it was true that they were badging it as a v6....

I just spoke to someone at VW and they told me that they are 2 seperate engines. I would assume that they are correct...

vw makes a 3 litre v6 that is mounted longitudionally in the engine bay
the VR6 cars ( GTI GLX) are still badged VR6
the b5's are not VR6 they are V6 hope this clears everything up

This will (hopefully) make it easier.
If the car has a transverse engine it is the VR6 in there. These cars are G/J A3 (93-99), G/J A4 (99-up), Passat B3(89-94) and Passat B4(95-97).
The Passats from 98-up to today have the Audi V6 engine. This one is a traditional 60º unit, and is used in the Passat because the Passat shares the floorpan with the Audis A4 and A6.
