Howdy!
I'm in the market for a new car. I'm thinking about the WRX, but am starting to lean heavily towards the GTI. I test drove one last weekend (VR6) and really, really enjoyed it! But after reading some posts here, it seems that the 1.8T is the engine of choice. Why? Which one would you recommend getting?
Thanks for your help,

Re: VR6 vs. 1.8T....... which one?? (Rattlesnake)

Well first off, the 1.8T has the biggest potential to make more hp faster.
the VR6 is a great motor, just takes more money to make hp.
since i have a VR im not going to give u biased info .. but if u want to spend less and get good hp, 1.8T is the best. But if u have the moolah, the VR will be best b/c once a VR gets a little boost, all hell breaks loose.

Exactly! I'm not gettin' into this argument anymore. Both great engines. 1.8T if u don't wanna spend too much cash. Vr6 if u wanna spend cash and fly

1.8t is cheaper to tune (up to a point), and you can get big gains right off the bat with very little investment. It's also lighter and handles a little better (less weight in the nose).
The big gain on a 1.8t is a new engine management chip. These run from $325 up to $700+ depending on manufacturer and options. I have an Upsolute chip that I paid $300 for (before price increase) and it gave me 205hp and 243ft-lbs at the crank. If you are thinking of getting a GTI, you should see if there's someone in your area with a chipped 1.8t. It's a completely different animal than a stock one. My chipped 1.8t has converted quite a few of my friends, one of whom has a VR6 GTI....
Not that there's anything wrong with the VR6....it sounds awesome at full throttle....

in a perfect world, I would have my 1.8t, just like it is, for racing and getting into trouble and a VR6(maybe even with a little turbo on it, 225 whp would be nice) to drive everyday.
The 1.8t is gonna respond to modification just like the WRX motor, but you can't deny that the the VR6 is a smooth motor, that is not too much of a slouch.

VR6 OWNZ U!!!!!!

Drive each one and see which one YOU like better. I couldn't really tell the power difference between a 174hp VR6 and 150hp 1.8T.
Oh!!! I got an idea--toss a coin, and just assign an engine to head/tails, and see which engine you end up with.

Well, I just came into this problem..get the new 1.8t or get the 2001 VR6 ( I couldnt wait to get a new car) In the end, it was all about the warranty. I love the stock VR6 engine, and the 1.8t is a great engine with alot of potintial <spelling?> but I dont want to void the warranty by modding the 1.8t like I would want to. Just my .02

Thanks everyone for your help! I'm sure this is a topic of great debate on this board and I'm sure a lot of folks have strong opinions one way or the other, but I'm just trying to learn as much as I can. Thanks for taking time to answer a rookie's questions.

Re: VR6 vs. 1.8T....... which one?? (U n i o n 0015)

Just to make a corection. The 2002 1.8T has 180 horses not 150 anymore. A great reason to purchase one like I have. I could have gotten a 2001 with the 150 hp but for $1500 I wanted the next model year and especially the extra 30 horses. This should now make the argument over which motor is better even more heated and "Yes" I have driven them both.
PS Forget the warranty. If you're going to mod a car, you're going to do it regardless which motor you go with. Once you have the itch, you have to scratch.

Yes, I know about the horsepower upgrade.

I was just saying that I personally didn't notice the difference between 24 hp. If I drove a 180hp 1.8T, I doubt it would feel much more powerful than a 174hp VR6 (to me). Good luck in your search Rattlesnake...they're both really great engines!

I was wondering the same thing........didn't somebody run a poll a while back and the VR6 vs. 1.8T question was the most asked question?

I test drove a new 1.8T and it felt really weak at low RPMs compare to my 6. But When I reved it I fellt the pull! I am trading in my 6 to a 1.8T in few months. You can always have more fun with a turbo!! But new 6 is gonna have a 6-speed but 1.8T is not...that kind of dissapoints me!!

Do a search!!!

They are both great engines, but they are totally different "animals." You have to test both of them to see what engine fits your driving style the best. Personally, I like having a turbocharged car. I've never had a turbocharged car before and the boost feels really cool. Once chipped, the 1.8T really shines!!! The fact is, they are both great engines.
