What is the cheapest thing that I can do to this 2.0 litre 8 valve to make a fairly significant change in the power.

cheapest noticeable gain, prob an intake or exhaust.
I'd recco the latter.

stick to the Exhaust, or intake....

Grind down the pegs on the seat track so when you floor it your seat slides back. Makes it feel WAY faster!
