I have to disagree with this one. If you look at the Consumer Reportst guide they no longer recommend the Jetta due to the reliability along with the Beetle they have reported a huge amount of problems. I am now second guessing my next purchse. I cant afford to buy a car and trade it a year later. The next car has to be a keeper.

Re: VW is getting better!! (DaBrown)

besides the infamous rattles, my car has been wonderful
I plan on keepin this car till she dies, then i'm going to take her completely apart, rebuild her, and drive her till she dies, continue process as needed.

It's this type of attitude that really ticks me off for several reasons:
1) Most VW's these days are bought by non-enthusiasts. The hyper-anal rententive VW owners are the minority not the majority.
2) For some reason it assumes that non-VW owners don't give a damn about the car that they've spent good $$ for.
3) It completely ignores the fact that VW deserves the score/rating it received.

I'll have a wonderful friday and a great weekend to boot!
Thank you for clearing things up. Unfortunately, your attempt at satirical comment is a common opinion held by a lot of folks on this board.

Re: VW is getting better!! (BostonMk4)

The thing to remember here is that JD Powers' surveys are self-reported instruments. They don't use dealership data ... the data comes from the consumers. That is, you get them in the mail, fill them out, and send them in. These types of instruments are incredibly invalid and unreliable, as the type of person who typically send these surveys back have a very strong emotional tie to the instrument.
If I owned a Lexus that is absolutely flawless, I will be more likely to send in the survey to say how great my car is. If I own a POS Kia, I might be more inclined to write in to say what a POS my car is. If you are younger and have a decent car with a few problems, you use the survey as a coaster or to clean the grease off of your hands after putting those mods on (i.e., VW).
Just eyeball the list, and you will see some serious anomalies. Does anyone here really think that a Saturn, Oldsmobile, or Jeep is more reliable than a Subaru? No way. Does anyone here think that a Jaguar is more reliable than a Honda or Toyota? Not a chance.
As a researcher, I can say that a good statistican can make numbers say whatever they want them to say. All research that is published, not just automobile data, needs to be looked at very critically by anyone who reads it. Anyone who simply agrees with research and blindly accepts it is doing society a tremendous disservice.
Is VW the most reliable car out there? No. Is it the worst? Probably not.
Can JD Powers determine initial vehicle reliability by just sending out a mail-back survey?
No way in hell.
