It seems like VW has nipped a problem in the bud.

They seem to have figured out that platform and components sharing is cost-effective. Next, they will working on reinventing the wheel.

With all the automotive news and information that is available, it is difficult to understand why more manufacturers do not learn from one another's mistakes and achievements.

I am not really sure what you get out of that, but VW has been platform sharing for years and years.
The Microbus got scraped because it was a US only project in a market ruled by cheap american bi products, that we cannot compete in without opening a plant in the us for quick turnaround and cheap parts and labor, plus lower shipping costs.
Besides that with the Euro-Dollar issues, the MB would have been way too expensive for your average minivan buyer.

Too bad. Do you think VW will bring one of their other "minivan" type vehicles to the US? They could use something in that department here, don't you think?

You mean the Sharan replacement. The Sharan ends in 2005 according to the chart on page 23 of this article: http://www.globalautoindustry....3.pdf
