Ultimate engine lifetime is dependent on the previous owner's maintenance habits. The 2001 VW maintenance schedule for US/Canada is:
8000km oil change
every 16000km maintenance including oil change and other things (every other one is a bigger one)
every 8000km oil change (1.8L and 2.8L V6 (not VR6) engines only)
every two years brake fluid change
Oil is preferably 5W-40, which is typically only available in "synthetic".
