Re: W8 Wagon (Cullen)

LOL....only problem with that is if I put the W8 badge on my 1.8T I'd become a R I C E R!

Kinda like the Honda boys putting Type-R stickers on a non-type R car.

{edit}WTF?! I type in R I C E R and it changes to DORK?!

quote:

Cullen, did you have a chance to sit in the W8 Wagon?
Does the interior look/feel different, like $8,000usd different?
I love that dual exhaust!

Yes, and the "normal" W8 has been at the dealer for quite some time now, I have been sitting in that several times try to look for something that might/would fit the "regular" B5.5 / B5.
To be completely honest I don't get the "REAL" Luxury car feeling in it, I dunno, I have to say that if I was to buy a W8 I would make it into a sleeper and remove all the badges etc, and make it look like a regular B5.5 I mean since there are Passats here in europe with even a 1.6 engine... (hey a "1.6" badge on a W8 would be nice!!)
List of normal B5.5 http://vw.dasein.ee/soiduautod/passat/hinnad.html

BTW here are the local prices: http://vw.dasein.ee/soiduautod/passat_w8/hinnad.html
Divide it by 17 to get it into USD
So the price range is:
$35.900 USD - $38.800
(I take paypal if you wanna order one
)

Re: W8 Wagon (Cullen)

No offence, but here in America, anytime someone installs a badge on their car that is different than what the car is, it's r i c e y. Some examples:
S4 badge on an A4
6 speed knob on a 5 speed
4-motion badge on a non-4motion car
W8 badge on a V6 or 1.8T
and yes, even the 1.6 badge on a 1.8T or V6.
Now I think it would be cool to have a W8 badge and a 1.6 badge in my collection or European parts, I wouldn't install them on my car.

Yes I am fully aware of this, the funny thing is how R i C e y is a US expression and at the same time there is a huge interest in EUROPEAN spec badges from the US.
What about "BORA" on a Jetta IV ?

Re: W8 Wagon (TexasVWdriver)

Talking about badges.
One day I was crossing a street in NYC and new S-class catches my eyes; it is dark blue and has a wide (1 inch) red stripe on the sides. But this was not all! On the front of the car, instead the regular badge had a HUGE TOYOTA badge.
If we do this to your 5000$ car is R I C E (!?!), but in a 70k+ car is like saying that you don’t really care about the money.

Well, "r i c e y" is the appearance (or attempted appearance) of performance. The 1.6 badge is supposed to take away that image of performance. I like to call this the "fat suit" effect. Take a really fast runner, and put a fat suit on him. He's still fast, but everyone thinks he's slow

That's simply the European name for a Jetta. It doesn't imply the car has more HP than it really does. VW didn't think American's would drive a "Vento" or a "Bora". So they changed the name to Jetta. And just like VW didn't think people would drive a "Passat". So they originally changed it to "Quantum".
Same as Nissan wanted to sound more "American" so they called their cars "Datsuns" over here at first.
Same as the Acura guys putting Honda badges on their cars. There is no Acura in Japan, only Honda. This too doesn't imply more HP than is there. Honda knows Americans won't drive a $30k+ Honda. So they came up with the name Acura just for us.
Same with Nissan and Infinity.
Same with Toyota and Lexus. To tell you the truth, if I had the money, I wouldn't mind having a Lexus IS300. But if I did, I would change the badges to make it a Toyota Altezza.

Oh, and if you installed an M3 badge on a regular 325 or an AMG badge on a regular Mercedes, that would also be r i c e because it immplies more power than you really have.

Re: W8 Wagon (TexasVWdriver)

Most people completly debadge their cars here anyway, especially the higher priced ones (actually most S-Classes I see here don´t have any badges)
To be honest, an 1.6 badged Passat W8 sounds like fun to me.
[Edit: prople just sounds silly]

Tex...you could be a car salesman...even the potential for a used car
salesman...
Try this http://www.visi.com/~bhjelt/history.html
For a car salesman a little bit of truth mixed with a little whimsy is a
good thing...

The Real Jetta Story: You are absolutely correct about the word Vento...

However, for the 1999 redesign of the Jetta the name Vento was changed to
*Bora* because the European Market HATED the *Vento*...so much, in fact,
that VWAG changed the name to *Bora* simply to distance itself from the
Vento.
It is important to note here that for years the Golf that we have here and
the European *Polo*(Now that is an interesting name
) has been
the been the Best Selling Car in Europe for years. Not true in the US, however.
Just goes to show how tastes vary...
