Weird Engine noise

I could use some help. I have a 2000 GTI VR6. It is stock anothing done to it. When I drive and I hit the gas hard. Right around 2700 to 3200 rpms there is the loud noise. Almost sounds like one of the plugs is out. (not quite that loud but that is what the noise mimics) anyone have a similar experience? I am looking for any sort of clues. I have had it in the shop and of course they can't hear anything. This noise only occurs when in gear. Not if I am in neutral and rev the engine to those RPMs. any help would be great. thanks.
