Weird sound coming from the tranny housing, what is it?

I lifted my gti VR6 up today on some jack stands just to take a look. I foiund taht my oil cooler was leaking, and when i rotated the tires both left and right front tires, it made a weird sound. When i turned it forward, then stoped,then reversed so the tire was spining the other way, at teh moment of the change in direction there was this stange sound in the tranny housing where teh axle going into the tranny. So basically, when the tranny is in neutral, when i rotate it so the car would be going forward, then change directions so the car would be goign reverse, this rattling sound occurs. Sorry, im trying to be as descriptive as pssible. The only way i can describe the sound is that it sounded liek a spray paint can being rattled. Sounded liek sometihing in there was rattling .......what could this [email protected]!!!!!!!!! Thanks~James

It could be just the teeth of the diff gears clicking together, you can usually hear that on an older tranny. Or it could be a loose diff rivet.
If it's the latter it's gonna blow and do this to your tranny if you give it too much stick off the line or try any burnouts. Take it easy.

I'm not trying to scare you, I'm just letting you know what the worst case scenario could be.

If it is a rivet it could GO at any minute and then it'll wreck the tranny. The only problem is if the rivet has already sheared and is starting to work it's way out of the diff. If it is then it'll be slowing machinig a groove in the diff casing, not good.
Start saving up for a Quaife or at least a tranny rebuild. Go buy another one now and then it won't matter if you blow it.
Until then, be very gentle with the car. No hard launching or speed shifting in low gears.
I blew mine after I'd been down the strip and beat my mate. I did a cellebratory 2nd gear burnout to show off and it went, spectacularly. Everyone I spoke to reckoned it'd be a failed rivet but when I got the tranny apart I'd actually snapped the diff pin itself!!! The guy who rebuilt it couldn't believe it ! He' done hundreds of 02A rebuilds and never seen that happen.

This is why I bought the Quaife and all the other tranny mods, I didn't want it to break again.
