Hi
This is my first post here, so bare with me if i make mistakes

I'm the owner of a GolfIII '93 VR6, thats making a VERY high pitched noise when it's being rev'ed around 2-3000 rpm's. The sound is simular to the sound of a belt rubbing against a metal flex tube. (But none of theese things exist in the vincinity of my engine!!)
I have tryed to locate the sound, and it sounds as if it is being generated from the area around the timing chains.
Have any of you heard of this before? Plz, don't say it's the chains as it will cost med around 3000 $ (And Euro for that matter) to change them!!

Ohh, btw, the sound disappears as the engine heats up....

Re: Weird sound! (Aceman_VR6)

It's not a squeal from the belt tensioner(other side of engine from the chains) that's a pretty common one. Either replace it, or take it apart and re-grease the bearing. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: Weird sound! (rocket vr6)

Ehhh...
The other side of the engine? The chains and the belt is on the same side of the engine. Can a belt tensioner make that horrible sound?
When you rev the engine with the hood up, you almost become deaf of the sound (it's VERY loud
)

Your timing chains are on the drivers side and accessory belt, etc on the passenger.

the timing chains are on the opposite side on a VR6, so im guessing its your accessory(sp) belt tensioner if you thought the chains were on that side http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
