Well, I bought a Passat, finally.

Tonight, I finally bought a Passat, after thinking about it and researching for nearly a year.
I got a 2002 Indigo Blue with tip, cold weather, Monsoon and Homelink as the only options. I was really looking for something without any options, but couldn't find it at all. I paid 23113 out the door. The only part of the buying process I didn't appreciate was the "Pac" crap that they kept saying - $500 that was their operating costs. I would have rather they just said they wouldn't sell the car without more profit. But I knew it was unlikely that I would find a base level car. I do feel a little ill looking at Edmunds TMV - but I know that they don't include this Port, floor plan and ad fees, so I wasn't too far off. So anyway, I pick it up tomorrow. It's a lot of money to me, so I am not feeling fantastic about it, but I hope I'll get over it when I'm driving it.
Ahhhhhhhhh!

Congrats. Don't worry about how much you paid, just enjoy the car!

It sounds like you got a great deal!!! I paid $500 over invoice with 6.7% apr, it ended up at $26,500.
Congrats on the new car. Be nice to it during the break in period

Yes, the TMV doesn't include those fees, which should be considered part of the invoice. I think carsdirect is the only site which includes them in their invoice. Btwy, these fees vary from region to region.

It was a lot of money for me, too. In fact, it was the most I ever paid for a car. However, it's the best purchase I have ever made. My Passat is worth every penny.
Congratulations on your purchase.

P.S. Indigo is a great color.

Don't look back! Just pop her into gear and drive. You know the old joke that ends "why yes, I guess I would sleep with you for $10 million..." and the guy defends the ugly name he called her earlier, saying "we've already established what you are, now we're just haggling over price"... It's the decision, not the price. You got yourself a damn fine car. Enjoy it!

It depends. Was it a lot of money because he just doesn't like the idea of spending that much on a car or because it could soon turn into a financial strain? These are very different reasons.

I'm in the same boat. Just got mine on Saturday. Payed more than you
It was ALOT of money for me to put into a car too.
It was my second new car...drove the first for 9 years, plan on driving this one for alot more. That justifies the cost for me.
Congrats and good luck!!!

Thanks guys! I picked the car up today. The dealership seemed to really want to make sure that everything was ok. Apparently the car was delivered to them with only 1 key plus the valet, so they cut me a new one before I left. I had to wait an hour, but my salesman sat with me and chatted. Apparently they weren't too pleased with the key thing because they said they had to eat that cost of $275 for the key and that was a large part of the profit. Anyway, car seems great. Getting used to the Turbo lag - but it's sort of like driving a manual and intentionally keeping the rpms low around town so as to keep the Turbo from kicking in.
Mine had the new HU, so I'm pleased with that.
As to the uncomfortableness with the money, it's just that it's more than I've ever spent on a car before. It's more than my parents have ever spent on a car before, for that matter, and they must have a lot more dough than I do. Also, I'm not working right now, so it's not a neat little matter of how this will fit into my monthly budget - it's all bottom line for me. The Finance lady actually tried to get me to put less down than I did, saying I could do better with the money, but I feel more comfortable getting more of it paid for. Anyway. Let's hope the car lasts and lasts and I am not a complainer here.
Thanks!

Why only one key? Are you sure the dealer will not keep the other key of your Passat? Your Passat is in danger right now. Don't park it near the dealer's shop or they can easily get your Passat away.
Mine has totally three keys, including a valet key.

Congratulations! I just received my new Passat last Monday (the 19th). I negotiated a price for the car from my dealer (Ed Carroll in Fort Collins, CO) on October 28th, and they went looking for the car. They found the exact car I wanted (1.8l/tip/Silverstone/gray leather/lux/monsoon/homelink) at port in Houston, and I had the car a couple of weeks later. Delivery was excellent, dealership and salesman (Dave Hess) were great.
I have hovered here on this site for a few weeks as a newbie without much to offer and lots to learn. The thing that strikes me to write here is that I have seen a lot of folks talk about how much the cars cost, and believe me I can relate to that. However, one of the best things about this purchase is what a great deal these cars really are! I love this car, and I think they are a steal for what we are paying. A strain on the wallet, yes, but a lot of car for the money!
I have had a couple dozen cars in my life so far, and many of them have been great to drive, but made me sick when I realized what they cost me. The latest of these was a 1997 BMW M3 that I loved, but got it USED and LEASED it, and it cost me more per month than buying this lovely new car to own.
Thanks to all of the great folks on this forum that offer so much great information to new owners! It's very much appreciated!
One happy new Passat owner

Interesting take on it - That didn't occur to me. The dealership said this happens all the time - it's just a piece of equipment that didn't show up with the car. I do live quite far from the dealership - at least a 20 minute drive, so if it was one of the shop boys...
Maybe VWGuild has an opinion? Should I call the dealer and ask them to search anew for the extra key? They seemed to cover most of the bases. Is this all that unusual? This is a big dealer that has been here for a long time - I can't imagine that they would do anything shady themselves... Is my car really in danger?
