Went to Car audio Installer Today with 2002 Jetta w/double din. What is a T-Tap?

I went to a Car audio installer today, and they were aware that no harness is available as of yet for the 2002 VW's with double din headunits.. They said they can still do a clean install by using a T-tap to wire the aftermarket headunits to wires on factory harness and tap into ignition wire as well. They said they wouldn't have to cut the harness at all. Is this method of installation reliable? Is this a common method of install? Thanks in advance.

Very common
So-so reliable (everyone will argue this one... putting on flame suit)
NOT AS GOOD AS SOLDERING!! (Given that a person knows how to solder well...)
However, more cost effective than soldering.
A t-tap is a small 3M connection that clamps onto an existing wire without severing it... not a solid connection 100% of the time.
Unless you are a perfectionist, T-taps should be fine.

Yeah, they can do it that way.T-tap,or in line splice,is a piece of plastic that folds over 2 wires and then crimps them together. No cutting, stripping or splicing is required.
Thing is,I've heard that the new double din hu's have to be in place in order for the dealers VAG tool to read the other systems in the car. It's not like the single din's with the K-wire.I don't know for fact how the new ones work.

Believe it or not, the installer I went to (North Shore Audio) is the audio shop Sovereign VW(Long Island) goes too if there are any car audio related problems.

on the 02 vws there is no harness yet and also there is no antenna adapter. so if you where to change your stereo to an aftermarket you would not have the radio on cd or tape for a while till the adapter comes out.
