what about these rims?

1208 Views 13 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  OettingerBeetle1.8t
Allright, Ive got a 2000 yellow NB that is soon to be lowered 2 inches. Now I have decided that once its lowered Im getting new rims. Right now Ive got the standard 205/55/16 size and I want to change it to 225/45/17. I was wondering if that will be a noticeable change, or if I just should keep the ones I have and just deal. Here is the original post with the rims... http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=236653 Im going for these cause they are a great price (a friend found them on here for me) and I like the style. I just wanted to see what other people think. thanks a lot!

I think they will look great on your car!! Even if you have 16's now, the 17x8's will look 10 times better!!
Re: what about these rims? (DubLicious)

DubLicious: The OEM VW 17's are 17X7, so I'd be real careful about getting 17X8.

Tocatta - 7x17
Issue #1: Tires
The 17X7 wheels use 225/45 R17 tires, but since the 17x8's are wider the tires will be wider. It would be a good idea post in the Wheel and Tire forum and ask vortex user "[email protected]" to comment on an appropriate size tire.
Issue #2: clearance
Since the wheels are an inch wider, I'd also find someone who has previously used 17X8" wheels with the same offset you are thinking of.

the stock 17's come with 225/45, the 17x8's come with 225/45 as well. I'm not seeing the problem. They should fit just the same, they're just slightly wider which will mean the tires will be stretched a bit. But they should fit just fine.
The only thing that would be of concern would be the offset.
Re: what about these rims? (DubLicious)

I think getting bigger rims would rock...suspension and rims are the two best ways to begin personalizing/modifying your bug.

Those rims are OK, but I think that they are a rip from VW. Better going off and buying similar type off the internet...

And OMG Dub,
You won't believe the difference in handling the wheel and tire change will make. Those stockers have so much sidewall flex that the car will continue to push in the corners even with your mods. IMHO anyway, obtained by seat of the pants and My GF's grip on my knee LOL

Nice looking wheels DubLicious! A good deal too!!!
[btw... Secretwaters'..... she's not getting those expensive VW rims... check out the link in her first post]

Anywho... I'm currently running on 17x8 OZ Superturismos with Z-rated Kumho Ecsta 712s size 225/45/17 with ZERO rubbing problems.
Oh yeah... I'm dropped about 1.75inches thanks to H&R springs and Bilstein shocks...
(the springs are advertised at 1.5inch drop, but after a season of auto-crosses, rally-crosses and generally hard driving, they've settled in at 1.75inches which I don't mind at all)

OH YEAH!!!! DUBLICIOUS...........
You WILL NEED to change your front stock sway bar out for a new one if you are going to drop your car lower than 1.5 inches!!!
If you don't, your driveshafts WILL rub on the stock swaybar especially when the suspension is under load or when cornering hard.

You know there is no problem with getting those size tires. I've got 19"x10" on the rear and 19"x9" on the front of my New Beetle AND it's dropped 3 inches. On top of that I run 18"x8" as daily driver wheels. Also, when I had my NB lowered 2 inches and cornered super duper hard at high and low speed it never hit the drive shaft. AND where is it writen that changing the sway bar will increase the amount of space between the sway bar and the drive shaft. So where's the problem

Oettingerbeetle: how in the world did you fit 19x9's and 19x10's under your fenders when dropped 3 inches? Aftermarket fenders? Narrow coilovers? And... did you really run a 2" drop with the stock front sway, no problem? This would be GREAT news. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: what about these rims? (SilverScarab)

umm... im even more confused now then before i posted my topic! just kidding, but it seems that everyone has different advice. so should i buy a whole new sway bar or not? and how much will that cost and where can i get one? also... i am going to get it lowered now (by march) and save up the money to buy the rims and tires later on, (probably wont happen till summer.) thats ok right? i dont have to do the whole thing at once? or should i wait?
Horrido... my hair isnt that light, its more of a dark purple/brown. and i am probably gonna take pics like that soon, but im not posting them here!

SilverScarab: 19x9's and 19x10s' fit perfectly under the fenders with the 3" drop and no rubbing. It's all about backspacing and spring ratios. I have the KW coil over set up on my NB. AND yes you really can drop your NB 2" and not hit the front sway bar. I ran the 2" drop a long time and no probs. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
