if the doors on the old 300sl are gullwing,
the doors on the late 60s (rear doors) lincoln continental are suicide,
the doors on the lamborghinis (diablo/murcielago/gallardo) are "scissor"
what is the right technical term for the doors that are on the mclaren?

gullwing= open out and up, no rotation of the door.
suidide doors= open backwards, i.e. from the front.
scissor= open with a rotation, the back or the door moves up and a little out.
I'd call them scissor

Re: what are the doors on the mclaren door called? (Comptechgsr)

Sorry, I missed this thread when it was originally posted, but I have the info you are looking for. I actually posted this in a thread on the Enzo once as the two cars share the same door design.

The doors found on the McLaren F1 are know as "dihedral doors". The same description is used for the doors on the Toyota Sera and Ferrari Enzo which have a similar hinge setup and door shape. The definition:
di·he·dral
adj. Mathematics
Formed by or having two plane faces; two-sided.
Relating to, having, or forming a dihedral angle.
and
Dihedral angle: the angular space contained between planes which intersect. It is measured by the angle made by any two lines at right angles to the two planes.

This is the Toyota Sera, which supposedly is where McLaren Cars got the idea from. I know that some racing cars had used the design prior to the Sera, but I'm not sure if it had ever been seen on a production car.

I think I have actually heard of them refered to as butterfly doors, but dihedrial is most likely the correct term.
(by the way, the gallardo doesn't have the scissor doors, they open horizontally)

Hey guys check out this photo gallery!!!!!

!!!!

Sweet!! I've been looking for a decent Sera gallery for quite some time.
EDIT: Oops - only three photos.
Oh well, better than nothing.

The only thing I really know about the Sera was that it was very cool and was not sold here. Someone else here should know more about the tech specs - we just have to hope they'll read a thread with a title that has nothing to do with it.

whats the point of doors that open vertically. i think they would only add weight.

i think they only boost the coolness factor.
(which is perfectly ok of course)

Re: what are the doors on the mclaren door called? (my 2.0 rocket)

It allows for a large door opening which is often required for cars with very low roof lines, while preventing that long door from having a very large sweeping arc as it opens outward like a normal door.
In the case of the McLaren, they went with the dihedral design to allow for the doors to be opened enough to allow occupants to escape in the event of a roll over. That proves to be very difficult with scissor doors or normal gullwings.
