what can i do to stop wheel hop?

2508 Views 36 Replies 22 Participants Last post by  Srexy
my tranny has given up due to wheel hop. i dont care about vibration or noise or anything side effects to having stiffer mounts, shoot, i used to drive old school toyotas, so the added noise and vibration would not phase me. what is the best brand that would stop or lessen wheel hop? how much? and where can i get it?
thanks for the help in advance.

I have the abd bushings and they reduced it a bit but I believe a nice suspension system would do a better job of killing it
Re: what can i do to stop wheel hop? (1gti2nv)

About to try Autotech myself.
Re: what can i do to stop wheel hop? (adityaax)

Since this seems to be plaguing everyone. And pretty much everyone has tried everyting wiht no success, I think everyine is still looking for an answer. Teh simple fact is that is it iprobably never gonna be fully relieved. Think you got it with one part, it pops back up a week later.
Well jettas got me down so I am considering getting a DSM, I know there are other reasons too dont' ask. So I Am going through the old stack of Turbo magazine and I am just watching TV, happens that when I glance back on the page its an ad for 300ZX stuff. There is a picture of new rear control arms with poly bushings in them. The control arms are for more camber adjustment. While next to the bushings it says, stiffer bushings to prevent wheel hop. Now, I dont' know if this would work in our cars, but it may be worth a shot. Gonna look around next week see if I can find some to try out, along with another driver side inner CV joint oops.

I have added Energy Suspension polyurethane dogbone mount bushings. On dry pavement the wheel hop is gone, it still shows up a little on wet.
Got them for $16 from http://www.suspension.com part# 15-1105
There is a little more vibration at idle, but in general the car feels much more solid and responsive, an excellent tradeoff for the amount of lost refinement IMO.
Re: what can i do to stop wheel hop? (MotoMannequin)

I did what MotoMannequin and got the same results. Buy those mounts!!!
Re: what can i do to stop wheel hop? (MRP2001GTi)

Here was my battle with wheel hop:
stock 150hp... Some hop on wet roads, impossible to break the tires loose on dry without hopping a bit.
ABD mounts + stock 150hp.... wheel hop gone
chipped+mounts. wheel hop was about as bad as before with stock mounts and stock HP (so not that bad)
chipped+mounts+suspension. wheel hop back with a vengeance! Just TERRIBLE. Hop all through first and most of 2nd
chipped+mounts+suspension+sticky winter tires in +9c weather. wheel hop completly gone. Seems sticky tires are a requirement.
Re: what can i do to stop wheel hop? (MotoMannequin)

Asked this once b4 but no one answered How hard is the install of the Bushings? And what's involved?

I'm also suspecting that the vertical rear a arm bushing is part of the culprit, the soft front one doesn't help either. If you you pull on it while the car is on a lift It actually moves about 1mm. Now imagine what 240+ftlbs of TQ can do. My MK1 didn't have any wheel hop, neither MK2 or MK3 with the same design maybe rubber was harder or because they had less shock down travel.

You also have to remember that your previous cars had much much less torque and probably smaller wheels that just spun instead of trying to dig in.

hmm... I've got chip but no suspension. We'll see. Energy Suspension has the A-arm bushings too, maybe I'll try those when I do the suspension.
btw hman, this is an extremely easy install, if you can change your oil you have the capability to do this. Took me about 15 mins., my wife was amazed! It's the 1st time I actually got something done on my car faster than I expected.

:sacriledge: Sell the dub?
Re: what can i do to stop wheel hop? (Srexy)

IF you are talking to me, well I still have a few, 82 diesel rabbit, 93 passat VR6, 88 Golf GT soon to be VR6/nitrous race car, and the donor 93 passat ( not the same as above). That and the jetta if it stays or goes will leave me with lots of dubs.
I bought a house back in august about an hour from AWE. The commute is killing me and I have lots to do before I sell it and move closer, like find out where we are moving the shop too so I dont' still end up far. But I just rememberd I had some money left over from my downpayment on the house so I may justpay off the jetta with that and keep it, and sell some of the other cars.
As for wheel hop, I am pretty sure it is gonna be a constant battle with these cars. I was thinking maybe it was the new motormount design and when talking with todd here he said that all the transverse cars get like that when you get a lot of torque to the wheels. The VW commnunity hasn't really seen this kind of power on average tuner cars, other then some crazy one offs. Its gonna take some time but I think we can reduce it greatly but never eliminate it.

Re: what can i do to stop wheel hop? (chris86vw)

I stuck some H&R coilovers and a set of Bridgestone S02 Pole Positions on the car and that got rid of it except one time in wet weather (which is not too much of a concern in Texas). I suspect that tires are a big part of it. My engine is still almost stock so cranking up the horsepower may skew my results.
Re: what can i do to stop wheel hop? (chris86vw)

Chris, did you say AWE was possibly moving? Not too far or too soon I hope!! I plan on going down there next month to get a chip installed.
Re: what can i do to stop wheel hop? (1gti2nv)

I could be wrong but wouldn't an LSD help too? I mean next the a good suspension setup I thought a Quaife would just eliminate the whole problem of wheelhop. I know that it's NOT a cheap solution.
Anyways, am I wrong in thinking the a Quaife or Peloquin will eliminate this problem?
I have NEVER ever, ever had wheel hop, but then again I have the Quaife, suspension etc.
Re: what can i do to stop wheel hop? (1.8T A2)

yea I heard an LSD is the way to go to get rid of wheel hop
Re: what can i do to stop wheel hop? (DaForceFedGTI)

We are currently looking at a building right off exit 26 of the PA turnpike, so about 15 minutes away, they timed it one time. Would actually be closer for me coming from where I live now by about 5 miles or so and the only non highway part of teh commute. We would not be starting our move till sometime in February at the earliest.
As for a Quaiffe/peloquin diff, helps but still not eliminated.

Is that the Ft. Washington exit?

Re: what can i do to stop wheel hop? (DaForceFedGTI)

that is exactly what that is, ambler is where we are looking to relocated. Our total SQ footage is about 4500 includnig the office trailer, shop, plus our new fabrication shop and that office. The new location is broken up into 3 sections, 1 5000 sqfoot shop, one 3000 sq foot shop, and a 3000 sq foot office space. just a tiny bit more room.
plans are for an AWD dyno on top of the FWD dyno we have now, all new lifts that I can actually fit under lowered cars since it is rare that we see those here
. And a whole bunch of other toys.
