so my car was rattling from what sounded to be the right front. no biggie, jacked it up, looked around. i was tapping the brake rotor to see where the noise was coming from, and i pinpointed it to what the bentley calls the "splash shield". i wiggled it around to reshape it a bit and make it stop rattling. i would make a guess to say i didn't move it more than 1/16". put the wheel back on, etc. etc. roll back off the lift and SCREEEEEEEECH!!!!!!! what did i do wrong? is the shield rubbing against the rotor? i can't tell what it's rubbing against by looking at it. i only drove it 10 feet into my garage, i'm gonna check it out later. any ideas?

Hehehe... Indeed it is the tie rod, the swaybar is pictured in Diagram #3

Oh, and the answer to your question is 44.

You probably bowed it in when you bent it and now it is scraping further down out of sight.
P.S. That is a tie rod, not a sway bar.

Re: what did i do?!?!? (late_apex)

oops. i knew that. really. i did.

well i solutioned the problem. basically, when i was wiggling the shield, the screw that holds it in came out a lil bit and was rubbing the rotor (not on the braking surface, the hub area). an open ended wrench did the trick. i put some double stick 3m outdoor tape stuff in between the shield and some metal part it was rattling against. problem solved!
i'd like to thank my sister for holding the flashlight, and bentley publishers for their helpful diagrams.
