Before things get out of hand, I'm only 18, and this is, for the most part, just a dream.
Anyway, today in class, we had to write an essay on our goals and dreams. I chose to write about my dream to own a VW dealership. I've worked at a VW dealer for a while (1 month as a sales rep) during my job placement for school. I really loved it.
Anyways, I was wondering just how far out there my dream really is. I figure, it would be a great idea to start thinking about it right now, so I can kind of aim my life in that direction. I assume that I would need a great deal of money, but other than that, what would be required?
I'm really quite seriously about this. I believe that I can pull it off and live my dream.
So help me out guys. What kind of education should I pursue? How much money will it take? What kind of training/experience will I need? Anything helps. If anyone could give me a link to VW itself, that would be awesome.
Thanks guys. Help this kid live his dream!

Re: What do I need to do to own my own VW dealership? (Crazyquik)
I figured that I needed a business degree. I'm going to start school this september. Hopefully, I'll be attending Stanford. But if not, it will still be a school that "ranks" in the top 10 (from USNEWS).
I meant what, beyond a university degree in business, I would need. I'm sure there's more to it than that.
Anyway, keep 'em coming; every reply helps.

-learn how to treat the customer like crap
-put tint and $1200 CD changers in every model
-hire mechanics who finished last in their class, then charge $120 an hour for labor.
-hire salespeople who dont know anything about the cars they sell
did i miss anything?

Lot's of money and flawless credit.
Ironically, if you actually have enough money to open your own dealership, you'd probably get a better return by investing it somewhere else.

For what it's worth, I've encountered many proprietors of dealerships and even a few automalls. Every single one of them also has a law degree. It's the most tremendous thing to have if you plan to do business, and it's the ultimate fall back. Not neccessary to achieve your goal, but not a bad idea in the least.

Charge rediculous prices for parts.
Hire parts man who argues with customers over the model and engine in their car.

sorry my mistake.
you are right about the parts counter people though
customer "I have a '99 new jetta 2.0 and need the power mirror switch"
counterperson "ok, so you have a 99...is it four or 6 cylinders?"
customer: "it is the 2.0 four"
counterperson "does it have a turbo?"
Re: What do I need to do to own my own VW dealership? (what)
GM has a special program for helping people, especially minorities open up their own points, with minimal out of pocket costs- basically the financing is taken care of by selling units and paying GM off over an extended period of time.
But generally, it's very hard to open a new dealer these days, usually existing points are handed down to very fortunate owners children...because opening a new one takes millions of dollars (inventory, land, new building, buying existing building, equipment, employees, etc).
Hey, you can always dream.....but play lotto before you do.

you are wondering what it takes to start an auto dealership? well how about the ability to screw other people in the a$$ while smiling and patting their shoulders as if they are your greatest buddy ever. okay, just j/k.
or maybe i am not.
seriously, buck loads of money and a flawless credit line go a long way towards realizing your particular goal.

If I was thinking of that, I wouldn't open a VW dealer. I wouldn't open a new car dealership at all.
I'd get a small specialty operation going. A tiny lot with some lightly used european cars. Your clientele will be better (financially and intellectually) and your profits per vehicle would be greater.
But, if you plan a specialty used car lot such as this, practice making complimentary cappu and coffee as well as baking pastries and bread. Oh, and pucker up those purty lips

Get an MBA and maybe a Law degree like someone mentioned here. Get a job where you will get some management training or management experience. Then, if you have the desire, use those TOOLS and start your own business. Good luck!

Thats actually probably a very good way to get to a new car dealership in the long run. Start by buying and selling interesting used cars. Specialize in finding unique cars for customers. People will pay a premium for that. Say finding that pristing UrQuattro. I think there would be a market for someone that could find those cars that most places overlook. You could probably start pretty cheap (say $100,000 investment). Hire a kick ass mechanic, rent a good garage with a nice customer space in a good location (if you are good enough, people come to you), and put in a lot of sweat and energy into it.
Once you get off the ground, you can sell the business and move on to more profitable new car sales. Or even better stay at what you are doing!

http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif He's right. And think of all the different assortment of cars you can drive. My friend currently does this and it doesn't take alot of money to do. What he does is buy cars at an auction and than advertise them in an Auto Trader. He has a large driveway at home where he keeps about 10 cars. When someone is interested in one of the cars he tells them to meet him at his office to show them the car.
However, if your heart is set on owning a VW dealership it doesn't take a law degree nor a business degree. It takes real world experience to learn how to run one. But since your daddy doesn't own one already, and show you the ropes you are going to have to get some sort of degree so that they hire you. Your goal should be to become a General Manager of a dealership so that you know the in and outs of the entire operation. Than you'll need a boatload of money and flawless credit.
