I just dont get it. They are nice to ride, have nice interiors, can be made to perform well, get good mpg, have nice exterior styling, come with nice stock wheels, tons of creature comforts, good in accidents, good brakes, our main concerns seem to be rattles and window regulators (which among all the things that could happen are just annoyances more than anything) feel solid, and the list of all the good qualities goes on and on.
Lots of people are just like "Oh its a Volkswagen" do you think it just boils down to ignorance or do you think there is a real reason??

Honestly, I don't know. I was totally shocked when my wife wanted a beetle, but she wanted it because it was a BEETLE, not because it was a volkswagen.
It was kind of funny, my mom is in the market for a new car so I suggested the new A4, she said, "i'd rather not buy an off brand. I was like, WTF?!!

People will see my car and than see some Honda and they just assume the Honda is a nicer better car. WTF?? Ever happen to you with a Honda or any other inferior (not talking about performance for once) car??
Re: What do you think the reason is that a lot of people dont like VW's???/ (NJTDI)

Theres way to many starbuck drinking ugly blond hair having 2.0 driving rollin on 15" hubcaps in the slowlane automatic mofos in this world [didnt mean to offend anyone but its kinda true]
I would have never known VWs were quick nice cars if it wasnt for Pele who showed me ventodans car long ago when I was looking for an audi.
Its way better than the dork image tho...

Excellent question!
I think that most people are brainwashed from the earlier years of the bug, where they know them to be an economy car, not the love affair relationship we know and have with our cars. The Volkswagen advertising in the US has ALWAYS been the best out of any other automobile name, but the classic ones seem to portray the humorous, ruggedness, and reliability of the car simultaneously. Underlying it all was always the economical value of the name VW. The new commercials have surely helped VW builld its' customer base, as the October Sales reports show. (Thanks, VWVortex!) I guess most people just don't see the greatness through the misconception of a practical, value-loaded stereotype.
It would be interesting to know which auto brands have the most customer loyalty. (Not gonna go check right now) I know that the more recent cars are notorious for certain problems, which are all over the 'Tex, but I know that for me, VW's have "something" that other cars (I can afford) don't. I can only try to name what that "something" is: soul, peersonality, a connection between the car and me, etc. Something like that, but not quite the complete definition of "something". It's hard for me to describe, but I am betting that if you are on this board, you know the feeling to some degree.
I think that there are other reasons too, but the majority of those who don't like VW's are ignorant of a few things, like what it means to enjoy spiritied driving, with a different car than the Joneses driving in the lane next to you. One that is built to (mostly) last for over 100K miles, WITHOUT rusting away.
There's two pennies.

Phil you should know the answer to this question already! you know people dont understand or know quality sh*t if it smacked them in the face! The only people who do is the people who took the length to check out a dub when buying a new car and found out that it was their TRUE LOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!
so we should kick back and have a
and laugh at all of the gay hondas

And an excellent answer.
I could not agree with you more. In a way our cars capeable of doing everything. We not always be the best, but if you want to go autoX, it can be done, you want to drag, go for it, you need to commute 150 miles sure not a prob, want to ride in aluxury and style?? yeah we got that to. its not all or nothing with VW's, sure there overwieght but its not useless crap its stuff that makes it the car I for one wanted.
Chace we will redeem our team after last weekend. Winter smackdown in December I am going to get my rightfully earned trophy.

I know why people don't like VWs...
They are tired of getting beat all the time.

Guess that must mean they love yours, Phil.

Re: What do you think the reason is that a lot of people dont like VW's???/ (I_Fly_GTi)

well maybe because of their quality. This is from my experience tho......they break a lot, engine wise...it's reliable, but things like windows regulator and stuff they do break a lot, is it because they are assambled in Mexico instead of in Germany...????
And second of all.....most service guys in the dealership are kinda sucks.....they bitch a lot about your mods.....
But the car itself...I personally think they're very nicely design, I love to mod it (eventho my pocket says otherwise......
) and if VW will improve their service....I think a lot of people will stick with VW....
Anyhoo...that's just my $0.02.....

The thing is the window regulators arent to horrible of a big deal. It sucks and is annoying but imagine if it was axles or something that caused serious damage to the car, or had killed someone.

I agree, and will be there right with you, but i am also going to show. And yet again, you spelled my name wrong! how long have i known you?Di*k
Re: What do you think the reason is that a lot of people dont like VW's???/ (betta jetta)

I believe it's for cultural reasons, and also quality problems Volks had a couple of years ago:
A) Cultural reasons: here in Canada, Volks are quite popular, especially in Quebec (half of Volks sales in Canada are done in Quebec, although Quebecers accounts for about 25% of Canadians). I think it's because people here appreciate smaller, manual-transmission cars, and dislike boats and SUVs (surprinsigly, although winter can be really hard here, there are proportionally less SUVs than in the U.S....)
In the U.S., I think too many Americans still believe that a good car is something rather large in size that has an automatic transmission coupled to a V6 and a mushy suspension that destroys any possible driving pleasure. The most popular American cars pretty much fit this description, but Volkswagen cars does not. European cars such as VWs are built around the pleasure of driving on twisty roads, which is mostly what they have in Europe. Comfort is secondary, and big boats with automatic transmission are hated.
In North America, we have those fancy, straight-line comfortable highways in which we can quietly cruise with grand-daddy's Cadillac. So I believe this is why Americans do not like VWs, it's because of preferences linked to cultural phenomenon.
B) Quality problems: let's not forget that in the mid-1990s, Volks had its share of quality problems with their Golfs and Jettas build in Brazil and Mexico. They are now solved but those problems still stick to the VW image in the minds of some buyers. Add to that the higher tag price a Volks command, and it might also explain why they sell less than Japanese cars who didn't encounter that kind of problems.

I think a vast majority of people associate them with VWs of the past. At work, some guy walked up to me and said ‘I remember my old VW and man, that thing was a POS . . . I’ll never buy another.’ I step back and say ‘tell someone who really cares.’ A lady the other day told me my car was a death trap and I responded ‘you’re preaching to someone who was hit head on at 50MPH in VW and walked away without a scratch.’ Seems like people become negative when they see that you enjoy something they don’t have
