I've always seen them done in 4th gear. The logical reason being your car doesn't reach max boost in 1-3 gears...

That and 4th is usually a 1:1 gear ratio with the engine or pretty damn close.

Right, typically you use the gear that is closest to 1:1, usually 3rd in autos and 4th in manuals (5th in some BMW manuals).
