Re: what is 4 wheel steering????????? (Tristan)

its when all wheels turn...kinda like monster trucks..and big fire trucks with trailers....the rear end turns opposite of the front...so that it will turn faster....honda prelude's had this for awhile. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Yeah, I test drove a 'lude with it a while back, a bit of a surprise at first. Noticed the "4 wheel steering" badge on the steering wheel, and in the course of the test drive I had to rather unexpectedly maneouver around another car and it kinda caught me by surprise; handy stuff!

i have an uncle that had one of those Prelude 4WS cars. he said it was nice, but the cost of an alignment was unreal (not that it mattered, just a bit surprisingly expensive). also, the car fishtailed a bit at high speeds if you suddenly turned.

Re: what is 4 wheel steering????????? (Obin Robinson)

I had it on my Galant VR4, and it wasn't too noticeable. Actually in that setup the wheels turned in phase like so:
//
//
Whereas most systems are out of phase:
//
\\
On my car, the rear would steer up to 1.5 degrees and only after 30mph. Its certainly not like they are visibly steering, or help you park or anything like that. And most people remove it when reacing etc, because it screws with the balance of the car (or at least what drivers are used to).

quote:

No one has mentioned that most 4 wheel steering system work in two ways.
At slow speeds, the wheels turn opposite of each other:
//
\\
At higher speeds they they turn in phase:
//
//

Ummm... see post above.... There are a wide variety of systems, because there are a wide number of solutions...

Isn't GM about to introduce 4WS on it's pickups? They say is improves maneuverabilty during parking and high-speed stability in emergency situations especially when towing a trailer. Seems like a good idea to me. Perhaps 4WS will prove to be more successful on pickups than on cars.

In the US, both the 3000GT VR4 and the Galant VR4 are both AWD with 4WS. Neither of those cars are stellar handlers, though...
There is one car I can think of that DOES use the technology to its fullest potential with AWD, the Skyline GT-R.
