What is a GTI

Hey guys, I just got interested in VW's a couple of weeks ago, and I just joined this site. I thought the only cars VW made were the Beetle and the Jetta. You KNOW I'm a newbie, so don't laugh, but, is the GTI a specific model, like the Beetle or Jetta or Golf. I heard from a thread somewhere around here that it was a boxy, hatchback, good performing car, and those are all things I like. So, is it a real car or a side-model of another car?

The GTI is another model.

the GTI is the fancy model of the Golf. It has better suspension and power windows and such.

The GTI is just a Golf with a sporty image. As a matter of fact it is called Golf GTI in Germany. I still do not quite understand why it has to be a separate "line" here in the US. It is a Golf anyway you slice it!

GTI in the US is marketed as a different car. In reality it's a 'sportier' version of the Golf. And it's 2 door only in the US. And you can only get the nifty toys and leather in the GTI, it could be a more upscale Golf.
In the rest of the world the GTI is just a model level / side model of the Golf. They are called Golf GTI.

even here it was a golf GTi until the mk3's came out

i consider a car that shares the same platform and same bloody body parts the same car i.e. golf and gti
gti only offers a better package
research volkswagen's history on the web, as for gti/golf, jetta/vento/bora and all other models too. and i can bet that you'll fall even more in love with vw

In Europe they have multiple models with GTI trim (i.e. Lupo GTI, Polo GTI, Golf GTI).
In America, we only have the Golf GTI.

Gran(d) Turismo/Touring fuel-Injection
GTI is a 2 door Golf with better suspension, sometimes better seats, more standard, 1.8T stock instead of 2.0 in the mk4 (right?)

I believe all Mk.4's have disc-brakes but 4-wheel disc brakes were a GTi specific feature for the Mk.3's if I recall correctly. There was also a 2.0 Mk.4 GTi out for some time, but it was dropped since 2001 (or may be even 2000) model year due to the Mk.4 platform being under-powered by the legacy 2.0 engine.

This is true.
You can also get a Golf GTI with TDI.

Why are there some GTIs and TDIs with red I and some with plain silver I... just a curiosity... Also the Lupo FSI has a green I and the futur Golf/Bora FSIs will have a blue I... Is there something to do with the polution emissions?
