I am considering purchasing the 6-disc Panasonic CX-DP610 changer for my '02 Passat. I assume the only things I need for a successful install are the changer, the VW/PC-PAN6 CD Changer Interface, and the mounting brackets from the dealer. Am I forgetting anything?

Re: What is needed for the Panasonic changer? (schmove)

I would also look into the 8-disc changer - I got mine from crutchfield, cheaper than the 6-disc (who knows why?) and comes with the interface and mounting brackets - its a snap to install. Not sure about your model year, but with my 99 I can access disc 7 by playing or FF through the last song of disc 6, do the same on disc 7 to get to disc 8 - or just let them play through. You could also spend some more $$ and get the interface that will allow your mix button to work. Have fun with your changer

thanks for the clarification schmove. i already pulled the trigger and got the six disc from logjam, and shelled out the money for the interface that allows mix functions.

Re: What is needed for the Panasonic changer? (passaturge)

passaturge,
While you are waiting for the changer to arrive, check out this helpful installation guide:
Here is a helpful site that explains how to save beaucoups bucks by installing it all yourself:
http://www.vwmafia.net/~roadsleeper/cdc.html
It is very easy to install. I recommend getting the brackets and screws from the dealer (~$15 for a complete set of brackets and screws) to secure the changer in the slot in the trunk (see roadsleeper's site, the link above for details). Note: some people have reported that there is a plug covering the actual connector that is attached to the pre-wired cable in the trunk; apparently this plug is there to protect the actual connector. This plug is very cleverly disguised, such that some people have confused it with the connector. If this plug is there, it has to be removed before you attach the adapter.
regards,
Brian

Re: What is needed for the Panasonic changer? (passaturge)

I bought my 8 CD Panasonic changer from Crutchfield. They sent me everything needed and more (cables, mounting hardware, etc.).
I easily installed it merely by plugging it in. Instead of the mounts, I surrounded and secured it with gray air conditioner foam. I tested this in Philadelphia by driving the bumpiest cobblestones in Philadelphia (Germantown Avenue in Mt. Airy and Chestnut Hill). The CDs did NOT skip and the changer was/is secure.
I need at least one more magazine to carry different CDs and switch out.
I very much miss an in-dash CD changer and will probably install that after taking care of other things (mud flaps, tint, etc.). Sometimes the music I have in the trunk isn't what I want.
Good Luck.

Re: What is needed for the Panasonic changer? (Penalty22)

installed my changer with the dealer supplied mounting brackets. had absolutely no difficulty fitting the changer and the bracket into the middle slot of the rear storage compartment. whole install took 5 minutes, half of that taken by trying to find the screws that had managed to amble all over the trunk on the drive home from the dealer

it all works great, but i did notice that the steering wheel controls don't work when the car is off, key not in the ignition. of course, they don't work for the in-dash unit either. first trivial annoyance i've found with the car. trivial being the operative word. controls work fine when the car is on, and i don't plan on spending much time just chillin in my car if i'm not actually going somewhere
