What is surging caused from?

It happened to me bad these past two days. I'm APR'd. The surge was so extreme too. I was hard on the gas in second, and literaly when I was letting up to stop at an upcoming light, the car just started putting out so much more boost for no reason, catching me off guard and making my reflexes come into play so I wouldn't hit another car that I was close to in front of me. Any ideas??? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Get a good DV. Your situation seems typical of a bad DV, at least from what I have read. It isn't software realted, so if it isn't the DV, then a leak or MAF issue. Try the DV first though.

I don't think that's surging at all!
I've found that sometimes there is a delay with the drive-by-wire in these engines. If you floor it, sometimes it takes an extra half second to 'release' the throttle -- ALSO, if your ASR was on, it will definitely take a half second delay for the throttle to shut off.

Yea, this was extreme though. But I do know what you're talking about. I'm also going to check out the DV, still running stock if you can believe that, so that is probably it. Guess it's time to put that new forge in. Haven't been chipped for that long, that's why I let it go, shouldn't have though. Thanks for the responses.

When the pressure after the compressor exceeds the energy of the radial component of the compressor wheel's output, you have surge.
Surge is where the air backs up into the compressor and oscillates violently. What causes this is when the engine's swallowing capacity is exceeded by the compressor's output. When this happens, the air backs into the intake.
The air backs up, the pressure after the compressor drops, and airflow resumes.
