What kind of problems should I expect when chipping?

589 Views 16 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  MRP2001GTi
I want to chip my 1.8T but am curious as to what failures I should expect. I have heard that DVs, MAFs, etc have a tendancy to go, but was curious if all or only a few have experienced this. Thanks.

You should expect the DV to fail. Other than that, given proper maintenance (premium gas, synthetic oil, proper cool down times), you shouldn't expect any failures due to chipping. To say it another way, other failures may happen, but they probably won't be due to the chip.

Speeding tickets, road racing tickets, sore face from grinning all the time

a permanent smile from ear to ear...and maybe some speeding tickets if you are not careful

Also forgot to add, increased tire wear, and a marked increase in scowling honda boyz contemplating your tail lights.

during every full moon you'll look like the wolf man after midnight; other than that, no problems

Many guys are frying clutches at 20,000 miles. ANd a replacement or aftermarket clutch IS NOT cheap. Keep it in mind!

not 20,000miles its 40,000 miles but those peopel all drag race at the track etc

NOT true. I've seen TONS of posts about chipped 1.8ts killing clutches at 20,000 miles. THere was one guy went through one in 15,000 miles who just recently posted. From what I understand, a clutch lasts about 25,000 miles after it is chipped. i.e. If you chip at 10,000 miles, and you drive fairly hard, you'll be replacing your clutch well before 40,000 miles.

ALSO, don't forget that a chipped 1.8t puts down like 230lbs of torque. That is a HUGE jump over the stock 155lbs on the older 1.8ts. It just kills the clutch like it were sand paper.

Cuz they are driving like dorks!
The only problem you will have is the lifespan of your tires will decrease at a rapid rate. Even my OEM DV was working when I installed my Forge.

Please stop saying this. I have over 25k miles on my clutch and its fine. If you drive the car properly there will be no problems. I see you drive a GLX, are you suffering from 1.8t envy?

There are also morons that seem to manage to go through a clutch with a stock 1.8t in less than 2000 miles.

Easy on the tough feelings everyone.

Apologies but guaranteeing someone they will burn up a clutch is just serious misinformation.

No, I am not. I love my VR6. I'm just telling you my experience from talking with people who own 1.8ts, people on here with 1.8ts, and owners of shops who have rebuilt clutches on 1.8ts with low mileage. I will admit that if driven properly, almost any clutch will last forever.
