what makes a clutch slip

I was wonderin besides abuse, what makes a clutch slip. is it possible that teh clutch can burn out due to the 2nd and 3rd gear grind problem or is does that only effect the gears? gimme some ideas of why a clutch slipps?

Clutch slips when the frictional forces of the pressureplate forceing the clutch onto the flywheel are not suffecent to hold the delivered torque to drive line. Hard shifts can cause problems grinding I can't see the relation other then if your grinding cause your not enguaging your clutch.
