Hi everyone. I mainly hang in the mki forum since it's al I've ever owned. I know a fair deal about VW' and all, but I'm not super familiar with any problem areas when buying anything other than an A1. I'm going out with a friend tonight to have a look at an '88 GTI 16v with 130,000kms on it. I know that on a rabbit, common problems to look for are rust under in the floors from improper jacking, on the strut towers, water under the dash or pooling under the seats from a sunroof, and other things like that.
What should I look for when checking out this bad-boy tonight? Price is only $3500CDN which seems a little low for a 16v with low mileage. What should I check with the engine to make sure thigns are ok? All I would know to look at would be rust problem areas, maybe different coloured paint to indicate an accident or something, and with the motor I would be clueless
Can you guys give me some helpful insight please?
We're leaving in a couple hours so any and all information, no matter how retarded or basic you may think it is, is appreciated! Boost your post count and help me out

Oh yeah. what fuel system does the 1.8L 16v use? I had a 16v in my old 76 rabbit, but I think it ran off some goofy CIS creation the previous owner did. Motronic was only for the 2.0L's right?

Is the search tool borken? Basically, there's rust (especially strut towers, but look all over), there's holed trannies, chipped gears, and, since it's an interference DOHC, bent rocker arms.

Other than that, it's like any other car. Keep a sharp eye out for signs of problems. Check for CV problems, suspension oddities, brake shudder, etc.

Actually, in my experience, yes it is

Yep, which is why I sorta always say things like that.
Search tools are great for finding webpages. They universally SUCK for discussion forums, which is why I actually answered the question about common A2 problems in my reply.
glad someone got the joke
