What the F! What's up with my ball joint

375 Views 7 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  marcogyver
Thanks to everyone about my tie rods. Soaking it with WD40 for a day was enough to pop them right out. I was hoping the same was for the ball joints. I beated the pickle fork in between the knucle and ball joint until the fork was totaly stuck. I'm picturing my C on a flatbed cruising down the highway with a damn pickle fork sticking out of the wheel well. HOW EMBRASSING would that be! I removed the rubber boot and heated the *&%$ out of everything. No luck! The only thing 'POPING' is my fringin back
Help!!!!!!!!

Try a puller that will work if I know what your talking about

If I use the puller, will I need to remove the axle to get clearance? The puller would need to push the thread shaft of the ball joint out of the knucle, right?
Re: What the F! What's up with my ball joint (marcogyver)

ball joints arent threaded
they are held in with a bolt that goes across a notch in the ball joint. the bolt is in the spindle behind the rotor

The ball joint on the SLC fixes to the control arm via three bolts and the other end fixes to the knucke(behind the rotor) via lock nut. No matter what, I couldn't get the passanger b joint free. Heat, oil and whacking the #$% out of it. It sat there and laughed at me!!! The driver side....three whacks and pop!
Not my problem any more. The mechanics now.
If any one cares, to remove the front control arm bushings...just remove both of them arms. The opening (ring on top) can be use to place the front bushing of the other arm into. Place it into a vice with a shallow socket and press it out. Do the reverse to install. Worked like a charm...10 minutes.

are you using an air-powered pickle fork? you can rent them i think....
also, hit the SIDE of the knuckle where the ball joint goes through it

pickle fork=bad
Re: What the F! What's up with my ball joint (SLAB)

No air pickle fork, just old fashion styled! I'm afraid to rent the air pickle fork, spend more money and still have to take it to a mechanic. I figure at this point I did 95% by doing tie rods, ball joint (note singular), control arm bushings, coils, struts and strut mounts. I need an alignment, let the mechanic do that and the one ball joint. Thanks for the support!
