Re: what watage bulbs should i use? (Rippen Raymen)

I'm still running DOT rectangular lights right now. Going to upgrade to Relay's and get some PIAA superwhites 100W/80W.. Output is alot better now that I have lenses without the yellowed reflecter portion, but it's still not great. I think they need to be aimed better.. anyone got that link for properly aiming headlights ?

Just minor upgraes till I can afford the single rounds w/ Hella 5000's !
Thanks.. and sorry for getting a little off topic !

What are your lamps' reflectors made of? If plastic, I'd be hesitant to increase the wattage because of the extra heat. If you do, check regularly to make sure you aren't melting anything. Looks like you have US lamps since you're looking at 9004 bulbs. Make sure you aim them properly (and maybe even a little lower than usual if you go with high-watt bulbs) so you don't blind people with the glare (Euro lamps are more anti-glare than US ones). Between the two bulbs above, I'd hafto see each of them before deciding. If there's any visible blue tint on the glass itself on the "Xenon" one, skip it 'cause it's a myth. Anything on the glass isn't going to improve light output.

i checked my car parts store and they had some that said 65/45, but also said that actuall watage is 100... what's that supposed to mean

Sounds like BS. Not sure how one can get 100W out of a 45/65 (standard wattage) bulb.

The getting higher wattage ratings out of lower wattage bulbs thing is BS.
I also agree with gti_matt about the coatings on bulbs...forget it. Anything they coat onto the bulb will filter the light to some extent.
If it were me, I'd go with these http://www.jcwhitney.com/item.jhtml?ITEMID=67301 because they are 55W low beam, which will keep you from getting a ticket or blinding people, and they have no coating, and they jump to 100W for high beams.
The e-code H4 bulb is built different completely, allowing a razor sharp cut-off on the low beams. This means I can run 100W low beams and never get flashed...which I do
The 9004 bulb kicks too much back up (on purpose, as per DOT rules), so running high wattages on low beams almost ensures blinding someone. Stick with 55W low beam, until you can get e-code lights.
I also agree about the heat...be sure you aren't melting anything if you do not have a metal reflector and a glass lens.
For info on how to aim lights, and tons of light info in general, check out Stern Lighting's site.
