What weight Synthetic motor oil?

811 Views 8 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  bk3104
Just bought a pair of ramps and a case(6 qts) of Mobil 1 in 5W-30. That weight is recommended for my Z3, and I was wondering what weight is best to use on the 2.8 V6 in my GLX. I just had the dealer do the first(5K) oil change, and within the next couple of changes, I'll switch over to Synthetic. Also, how difficult is the change on the V6? Any idea if you can get Synthetic in a case larger than 6 qts?

I use Mobil 1 5w30 year 'round in my V6 and I think you can do the same.
You can buy 4 L jugs of Mobil 1 at Canadian Tire and Wall Mart.

If you look in yor manual, VW suggest 5w40. Realisticly, 5w40 is very hard to find. VW is aware of that and also states 5w30 is ok. I've always used synthetic Mobil 1 5w30 and now I just tried using Castrol syntec 5w50. Seems ok so far.

Ampoil 10w/60 Racing Synthetic here......

Another vote for Mobil-1 5W-30, year-round (although I have a punk 1.8T, not a V6'er).

Valvoline SynPower 5w40 is at the local NAPA store..
Re: What weight Synthetic motor oil? (bk3104)

before I did my first oil change I read all the literature I could find about synthetic motor oils. The one thing that jumped out was the wide tolerance the all seemed to have over the realistic temperature ranges that a North American driver could encounter: extreme hot and cold weather. I settled on Valvoline Synpower and last year I used 10w30 and currently I am using 5w30, Wix oil filter. Mobil 1 is a great oil too. 7000 miles between changes should not be a problem, unless perhaps your Passat is a taxicab.

Because I don't have a turbo and don't drive in desert heat, I don't need the extra protection that a thicker oil has. I can also take advantage of the "energy conservation" properties of 5w30 oil--even if it only means 1-2 mpg
.
Edit: Halifax, MA? Sorry, I thought you were a fellow Canuck

Stargazer...nope, sorry. I'm in Massachusetts, not Nova Scotia. Whenever I'm buying something and am asked for my address, I always tell the person "Halifax" and wait to see if I get a curious look and the question of "Nova Scotia?". It's usually good for some conversation. So, nope, I'm not a Canuck. Sorry, but thanks for the great info about Synthetic. I bought a case(only 6 qts) of Mobil 1 5W-30 over the weekend, plus a set of ramps.
