I've noticed a couple of absolutely terrible names for cars here in Germany.
- Daihatsu Applause. YAY it started!! (claps vigorously)
- Kia Pride.
Then there are Jetta sized cars with badging like "super hyper mega sport Type-SE-R 1.6L" Since when is a 1.6L a performance engine?!?!
Seeing Audi A8 2.8Ls and BMW 520is makes me laugh so hard. My roommates 1.3L Golf is a joke too. The thing can barely move.

I saw one with badging on the side that said "Echo Echo Echo", with the font gradually fading away. Does that change your feelings about the car at all?
I still hate it, and the name. The one that pulled up next to me with the big chrome wheels and the idiot driver who looked at me, wanting to race, didn't help change my feelings towards this little rollerskate of a car.

hrm. i dont know... i sure would take a hatchi with a Formula Atlantic spec 4age. i would consider that a performance engine.
pretty much the same deal with the B16, i would consider both of those performance engines (permitting they are stuffed into a light enough chasis)

Let's not forget the Chevy Nova -- a fine name in English-speaking countries but not so fine in Spanish-speaking ones. (where it suggests "It doesn't go.")

Pinto fit with their marketing at the time, they had the Mustang and the Maverick, so calling the small car Pinto fit perfectly. Like how Mercury called their version the Bobcat. Now Escort, that just sounds like someone you get for a night out when you're on a busniess trip.

Ever driven a Triumph Dolomite Sprint? First 4-cylinder 16v production car, IIRC
Singer Chamois - would imagine this would be to think of agility, as a Chamois is a mountain goat. The Imp and its relatives were definitely agile, if not fast
Add to your 'lost in translation' list:
Fiat Uno - Fiat One
Fiat Tipo - Fiat Type

Re: What were they thinking??

Fiat Multipla - sounds like you're going to open the garage one day and discover that your van asexually reproduced (hey, the Multipla multiplied!)
Mercury Mystique - far too close to being the "Mercury Mistake"
Chevy Sprint - oxymoron alert!
Dodge Neon - cars named after scientific things tend to suck (see: Saturn Ion)
Ford Probe - even though I currently own one, I still wonder what they were smoking when they named this car

Re: What were they thinking?? (03kpa)

Don't confuse my innapropriate names list for cars I don't like. I actually really love alot of those cars - Dolomite and Imp derivatives included.
I even went so far as to almost import a Dolomite Sprint two years ago, but I didn't have a good place to store it when it wasn't in use. But that's how I learned all that stuff about importation....
...and how hard it is for newer cars and relatively easy for older ones.

Lost in translation? That's simple: VW Golf for the US market. And VW Touareg is still just stupid.

THe person who formulated that urban legend probably slept through highschool spanish. I call as my witness Snopes.com
http://www.snopes.com/business/misxlate/nova.htm
I rest my case. I'm suprised noone else jumped on this one yet
as to What were they thinking car names I think inventing the name Merkur as a new "division" of ford was pretty lame. ANd the Daewoo Lanos Nubira and Leganza always offended my ears.
other silly car names JDM Toyota echo is called the Platz. I'd say echo is an improvement. although I am dissapointed you can't get it in Pink here. I also from the JDM toyota Lineup: Ist, Windom (always makes me think of pro-wrestling), ED, and there's a trim level on the Toyota crown called the 'royal' so you can drive a Crown Royal.
I also think Wingroad sounds pretty silly I think that's a Nissan but I could be wrong.

My vote goes to the Mitsubishi Mirage. From far away, it looks like a reasonably nice car (Lancer Evo?). Only when you get close to it, do you realize that it's a POS econobox.
