Re: what would I have to do to make a 1.8t 4 door golf out perform a GTI? (turbotrixie)
GTI (assuming 1.8t motor) has:
-a little less weight
possibly more power if AWP
4-door golf has:
-more structural rigidity
Most you would need is some sport springs and a chip (or even a BCS would do it) and you would be looking at near equals.

how much are we talking? Just new suspension and wheel tire package?
when did they stop making the 1.8t in 4 door golfs?
The nice thing about GTIs is that so many owners upgrade things (meaning, you can buy the take-off stuff cheap and add it to your 4-door -- see my sig).
As for power, the '01 GTI and Golf both made the same horsepower: 150. In '02 (when the 4-door was no longer available w/ 1.8T) the GTI got a power bump to 180. As another poster stated, a chip can easily make up the difference and then some (my next mod).
The best part is seeing the double takes when they first see a GTI going by then count the doors.
