I once had to package a complete model airplane with a 7 foot wingspan.. basically I built a crate around it out of cheap fiberboard, with 2x2 supports in the edges.. and i secured the fuselage to the crate via the landing gear mounts and made a cradle for the wing..
The crate was then loaded on a greyhound and the airplane was shipped to toronto.
you could do something like that..
